In the late s, the renowned American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger John Hicks formed one of the most influential ensembles consisting out of musicians that had played music at the highest level all their lives and gained their status as both stand-alone artists and important sidemen.
Each of them had participated in many of jazz's great moments and all shared the ability, documented on many albums, to inspire their fellow musicians to even greater heights. On this album Is That So? He served as a leader on more than 30 albums and played as a sideman on more than other recordings. Love Is Strange - Buddy Holly - Hits And Other Favorites (CD) the early '70s he taught jazz history and improvisation at Southern Illinois University before resuming his career as a recording artist.
He then toured with Sam Cooke and would later go on to work with Curtis Mayfield. The album was produced by John Hicks and Timeless Records owner Wim Wigt and is a remarkable outing of advanced musicianship by three jazz-giants in their prime, delivering an inspirational gem of an album. Shirley Manson - Noir When Garbage were on hiatus in the second half of the 's, Shirley Manson set about working on a solo album, which reportedly featured a collaboration with Rivers Cuomo, but when she brought the material to her then-label Geffen, she was told it was 'too dark', as they had envisioned Manson having international radio hits and becoming the 'Annie Lennox of her generation'.
She and Geffen subsequently parted ways and she continued working on solo material, and also considered leaving the music industry behind entirely, but then Garbage reunited and released albums in the 's, and the solo album was put on the back burner.
Some of the songs have since appeared online, with 'In The Snow' and 'Pretty Horses' surfacing infollowed by 'Lighten Up' the next year, and Manson posted 'Dark Hearts And Heart Beats' on her Facebook page inbut investigation has discovered that it was copyrighted inand was therefore part of the solo album recordings. Manson also collaborated with other artists, and provided songs for TV and film soundtracks throughout the decade, and so there are actually enough songs out there to make up a 'solo' album for her.
I've done a bit of work on 'Brass Muscles', which was a second piece that appeared on the soundtrack to the TV series 'Wet Hot American Summer', and by repeating the verse and chorus and then adding a coda to fade out I've expanded it to sound like an actual song of almost two minutes.
Even on the collaborations Manson takes most of the lead vocals, and so by mixing her own demos with the duets we end up with a very creditable solo album from her, and as she used to refer to it as her 'noir record', that's what I've called it.

Kraftwerk - Pop Und Avantgarde In early Kraftwerk were on the cusp of international recognition with the imminent release of their 'Autobahn' album, when they were asked to perform at the large broadcasting hall of the Hessischer Rundfunk HR1 as part of a festival of music. The theme was to be various minimalist musical concepts under the title "Between Pop And Avantgarde", with Kraftwerk performing their set on the 25 Januaryand with some of the performances being recorded and broadcast on German radio.
The band played pieces from their three albums, as well as one from the forthcoming 'Autobahn' record, and as it was recorded for radio broadcast the sound quality is excellent. There were some very long announcements in German throughout the broadcast which I've removed or edited out, so that we can enjoy the music uninterrupted, and although I don't usually post live albums, this is of such historical importance that it deserves to be heard, as it features a line-up of the band which never made it to a recording studio.
Labels: Kraftwerk. He'd been working with the E Street Band at his home studio, Telegraph Hill Studios, which was actually a barn at his Holmdel, New Jersey property, and by early August there was an initial cut of 10 songs, with Columbia beginning to believe they might have a new Springsteen record in time for Christmas.
A track sequence was prepared, and in September, Bob Clearmountain was brought in to mix twelve tracks. Springsteen signed off on 'The Ties That Bind', and the tapes were sent off for mastering on October 15, but when they came back he suddenly cancelled the release, and went back to recording more songs.
He later said that he felt the songs lacked the kind of unity and conceptual intensity that he liked his music to have, and his manager and co-producer, Jon Landau, suggested that maybe this record needed to be a double album, in order to encompass everything Springsteen was trying to achieve. After another seven months at the Power Station, the sessions came to an end, and 'The River' was released on October 17,including 20 of the 50 songs that had been recorded.
Springsteen added darker material after he'd written the title track, and the album became noted for its mix of the frivolous next to the solemn, but he confirmed during an interview that this was intentional, as a deliberate contrast to his previous record.
Bootlegs have long circulated of 'The Ties That Bind', generally in excellent quality, as the album was mastered ready for release, but a major upgrade was Love Is Strange - Buddy Holly - Hits And Other Favorites (CD) out on the original tapes inmaking them sound even better.
What was remarkable in is that most tracks on this 'temporary assembly' of the album remained unreleased, with 'Cindy' being the one major 'River' outtakes that Springsteen was still sitting on, and the alternate verse in 'The Price You Pay' remains lost, while the rockabilly 'You Can Look But You Better Not Touch ' and the double-tracked vocal take of 'To Be True' had never seen the light of day.
The single album was eventually released as one of the discs in the box set release 'The Ties That Bind: The River Collection', but to my ears this bootleg just has the edge over that version, so give it a listen and see if you agree.
Finally, even when MGM Records decided to sign a contract with her, it was basically because one track she had recorded, "Freddy", happened to be the name of the son of a company co-executive, Harry A.
Meyerson, who thought of this song as a nice birthday gift. Hence, "Freddy" was released as Francis's first single, which turned out to be a commercial failure, just as her following eight solo singles were. Despite these failures, Francis was hired to record the vocals for Tuesday Weld 's "singing" scenes in the movie Rock, Rock, Rockand for Freda Holloway in the Warner Brothers rock and roll movie Jamboree. However, her minor chart success came too late for her record label—Francis's recording contract consisted of ten solo singles and one duet single.
Though success had finally seemed to come with "The Majesty of Love", Francis was informed by MGM Records that her contract would not be renewed after her last solo single.
Francis considered a career in medicine and was about to accept a four-year scholarship offered at New York University. At what was to have been her final recording session for MGM on October 2,with Joe Lipman and his orchestra, she recorded a cover version of the song " Who's Sorry Now? Francis has said that she recorded it at the insistence of her father, who was convinced it stood a chance of becoming a hit because it was a song adults already knew and that teenagers would dance to if it had a contemporary arrangement.
Francis, who did not like the song and had been arguing about it with her father heatedly, delayed the recording of the two other songs during the session so much that, in her opinion, no time was left on the continuously running recording tape. The single seemed to go unnoticed like all previous releases, just as Francis had predicted, but on January 1,it debuted on Dick Clark 's American Bandstandand on February 15 of that same year, Francis performed it on the first episode of The Saturday Night Beechnut Showalso hosted by Clark.
By mid-year, over a million copies had been sold, and Francis was suddenly launched into worldwide stardom. In April"Who's Sorry Now? As Connie Francis explains at each of her concerts, she began searching for a new hit immediately after the success of "Who's Sorry Now?
After a few hours, Francis began writing in her diary while the songwriters played the last of their ballads. Afterwards, Francis told them that she considered their ballads too intellectual and sophisticated for the young generation and requested a more lively song. Greenfield urged Sedaka to sing a song they had written that morning with the Shepherd Sisters in mind. Sedaka protested that Francis would be insulted, but Greenfield said that since she hated all the other songs they had performed, they had nothing to lose.
Sedaka then played " Stupid Cupid. It went on to reach number 14 on the Billboard chart and was her second number 1 in the UK. The success of "Stupid Cupid" restored momentum to Francis' chart career, and she reached the U.
Inshe gained two gold records for a double-sided hit: on the A-side, " Lipstick on Your Collar " number 5and on the B-side, " Frankie " number 9.
It soon entered the album charts where it remained for 81 weeks, peaking at number 4. To this day, it is still Francis's most successful album. Following this success, Francis recorded seven more albums of "favorites" between andincluding JewishGermanand Irishamong others.
These albums marked Francis's transition from the youth-oriented rock 'n' roll music to adult contemporary musicwhich George Franconero, Sr. Nevertheless, Francis continued to record singles aimed at the youth-oriented market. The movie also introduced the concept of spring breakas the once sleepy town of Fort Lauderdale became the hotspot for college students on their spring vacation in the wake of the movie's success. In her autobiography, Francis mentioned that in the early years of her career, the language barrier in certain European countries made it difficult for her songs to get airplay, especially in Germany.
Francis used these reflections as the basis for her April recording, " Everybody's Somebody's Fool " which would go on to become the first single by a female artist to top the Hot It was not until her number 7 on the US charts, " Many Tears Ago ", later in when Francis began to record cover versions of her own songs in foreign languages besides German.
Over the following years, she eventually expanded her recording portfolio up to 15 languages. Francis was not fluent in all of these languages and she had to learn her foreign language songs phonetically.
Francis explained in a television interview that she was fluent in Spanish and Italian, but always had a translator nearby to make sure her translated lyrics and especially her pronunciation were as correct as possible.
In the wake of " Die Liebe ist ein seltsames Spiel ", Francis enjoyed her greatest successes outside the United States. During the s, her songs not only topped the charts in numerous countries around the world, but she was also voted the number 1 singer in over 10 countries.
Inshe was named the most popular artist in Europe, the first time a non-European received this honor. The Beatles Anthology Thanks. Show all Hide all Show by Hide Show Composer credits.
