It starts off with the "space cadet, pull out" lines being repeated rather softly, then the light acoustic guitar, and works its way into full band.

Then it suddenly just becomes a mess of drums and guitar. You'll jump the first time, and any subsequent time you aren't paying enough attention The noises at the end of "The Archers Bows Have Broken". It sounds like a horrible wail. The song "Vices" from the album "Daisy" is a perfect example. It starts out with an old hymnal sung by a soft female voice. The vocals trail off and seconds later you're hit with wailing guitars and screaming lyrics for the remainder of the track.

The album closes with the rest of that hymn. A few seconds after pop-punk band Goldfinger's cover of the Cold War anthem "99 Red Balloons" seems to fade out at the enda man with a deep voice can be heard saying "Goodnight children, everywhere.

A Psychopath" by Lisa Germano is an inversion. It's an incredibly creepy song about a Stalker with a Crush from the stalkee's point of view, with a real call playing in the background. Until the last 30 seconds or so, with a cheerful-sounding instrumental that wouldn't sound out of place at a circus. The same calliope instrumental appears throughout the same album as both its intro and after " Of Love and Colors", seemingly as a form of comic relief from its dark and sad mood.

Muse 's "Take A Bow" is already a dark, chaotic song with foreboding lyrics and an overall menacing sound, but the last minute or so is more than enough to scare the living lights out of the listener. Guitar wailing, Matt Bellamy wailing, synths wailing, strings wailing The last minutes of "Space Dementia".

The circus-style manic keyboard line could not possibly be any more sinister, and just when you think it's is over, it kicks back in with this monstrous, threatening coda with rapid piano arpeggios. Even the first chorus transition is tremendously startling.

There's a momentary lull in "Darkshines", with quiet bass underscoring a tranquil but unsettling guitar line. And then it explodes into the crazed intensity of before, with screeching guitar riffs and vocals that are practically howled out. The erratic drums don't help much. An early B-side, "Host" starts off with some creepy ringing chords and a generally eerie feel, and moves into mid-tempo minor chord ballad feel.

After its bridge, the tone of the song suddenly shifts into speed metal at around 45 seconds from the end. This is guaranteed to shock people hearing it for the first time, though it is an extremely satisfying solo. It's a relatively laid back song for the band at that point in their career though plenty of Lyrical Dissonance is going on until the last crunchy chord, which is followed by a guitar playing a variation on the main rhythm with descending chords Subtle, but it effectively underscores the bleak lyrics.

Ween 's "Don't Laugh, I Love You" is a cute, light song until, after a little of what at first appears to be the setup for the fadeout, becomes over a minute of a sound very much like an audiotape audibly rewinding, overlaid with nonsense syllables. Not scary as much as irritating. The Weezer song "Undone The Sweater Song " eventually ends on an extremely unsettling clash of noises reminiscent of someone mashing the keys on the far left and right sides of a piano, concluding with the muffled sound of the piano being slammed shut.

Subverted in Lemon Demon's "Mold en Mono". The happy, bouncy song starts to fade into sinister static and backmasking at the four-minute mark, then slides into portentous violins and creepy moaning So, just like And, yes, subversion or no, it's not fun to listen to late at night.

Lemon Demon likes to use these to varying degrees in his music, ranging from the slightly startling the ending to I Know Your Name, which ends on a sound clip of a fire burning, leading into the next track to moderately creepy the ending to Subtle Oddities, which might be considered narm when you find out what it actually is to just downright frightening inverted with the beginning to Flamingo Legs, which samples the aforementioned Don't Laugh, I Love You from Ween. From the Mouth trilogy also made by Lemon Demon under his real name, Neil Cicierega is I'm gonna Let It Be", a mostly humorous mixture of " Let It Be " and " I'm gonna Be " that ends with an ascending synthesized sound that gets louder and louder, before abruptly leading into "Daft Mouth".

The untitled ninth track of Sonic Youth 's Washing Machine sometimes called "Becuz Coda" since it picks up exactly where opening track "Becuz" fades out : After 2 minutes and 20 seconds of lulling instrumental jamming, it seems to come to a close Not a hugely ominous one, mind you, but just unexpected enough to potentially make you jump out of your seat a bit.

Also, "Mildred Pierce" from Goofor that matter. The song starts off as a steady, repetitive instrumental jam Not to mention the distorted screaming.

The song "Dream" by Forest for the Trees is a fairly upbeat blend of psychedelic sitar-strumming and Irish folk melody that segues out at the end into a series of idyllic sounds reminiscent of a sunny morning in the suburbs: birds chirping, grass rustling, the rhythmic "sput-sput-sput" of a lawn sprinkler Phish 's "Maze" has an inversion of this: after a very fast, aggressive jam section, the song suddenly quiets down, seeming like it's going to come to a soft, eerie end with the protagonist lost in the "maze" forever.

Making it a bit jarring when the last measure of the song is a happy polka riff. A First Note Nightmare, which is most effective when you hear the radio version first: The album version of Blue October's "Hate Me" begins with a rambling phone message from the narrator's mother. Without that bit the song sounds like a girlfriend break up, unhappy but standard fare; when you realize it's his momwell, that's just heartbreaking.

It's not particularly jarring in context, though, because it's all about child abuse. Inverted with Beck 's "Lord Only Knows" from Odelaywhich starts off with a first note nightmare but immediately calms down. Played more straight with the B-Side "Alcohol", a gentle, slightly eerie folk song that ends with about a minute of tribal drumming and harsh feedback.

And while "Fume" is a bit noisy and queasy-sounding to begin with, its sudden mock-death-metal coda is pretty jarring. Modest Mouse 's song "Parting of the Sensory" ends with what sounds like someone trying to spit something up. But somehow it seems appropriate as it seems to coincide with the final result of the title Another Wire alumnus, Colin Newman, has his fair share of perverse transitions and endings, the most sinister being the bizarre middle-eight to "Image" and gradual breakdown of "The Classic Remains", both on A-Z.

Thrice's "Digital Sea" is overall a calm, if a bit melancholy, tune however in the last few seconds the song takes a turn into unsettling territory as the line "here my voice goes to ones and zeros" fades into a murmur All accompanied by radio static. Yeah, just a little haunting. This otherwise upbeat song ends with the intro for another of their songs, "The Crowing," reversed. It's quite creepy. Also on the same album, the ending of "Backend of Forever" ends with a creepy piano melody.

At the end of Coheed and Cambria 's "Three Evils Embodied in Love and Shadow ", the sound of rain and a vaguely creepy piano are punctuated by sobbing and an absolutely terrifying scream. Which is fairly long for a last note nightmare to go on for, especially considering that the whole track is 4 minutes long. Double-subverted in Spacehog's "In the Meantime". The song ends in a spiraling flurry of spacey synth and guitar feedback The final chord of this interlude, however, is played against a thundering piano chord in reverse — it gets progressively louder and then cuts off abruptly.

The last song on Silversun Pickups ' album Carnavas is "Common Reactor", which is a kind of light-hearted song until you hit the outro, where all calm is suddenly sucked out and replaced by a good minute and a half of discordant whirring and sputtering. The unearthly wailing and echoing bodhran drum that end The Cranberries ' "Dreams". The song itself is pretty weird though, so it doesn't sound all that out of place.

A much better example is "Id Engager," an otherwise uncomplicated dance song about a one-night stand — it cuts out mid-measure, all the instruments come in at once, and all settle on a single legato note, except for a fiddle that loops two ominous notes. Both then rise in volume until the song Turn Off The Lights - Code 3 (4) - The Best Group Never Heard (CD) last on the album abruptly ends. The natural ending of the song is followed by crashing drums and a scream, after which there's a little "dun dun dun" on the keyboard.

Spoon's "The Underdog" ends, right in the middle of a big brass fanfare, with what sounds like a piano being slammed shut. The tense, funky "Mystery Zone" cuts off abruptly, after 5 hypnotic minutes of bass, in the middle of a line. It leads to an ominous high drone of arco strings similar to that which begins the album and outdoor noises, like birds twittering, cars passing by, and dogs barking. It seems like you can verrrrry faintly hear near-inaudible female whispering, too.

Sounds like waking up from a dream, which is appropriate as the first song is a lullaby. Starflyer 59 's "First Heart Attack", the final track on the album Oldis an indie rock song with a space-prog guitar solo in the bridge; then the final chorus is followed by 15 seconds of a drum simulating a heartbeat, while an audio clip of a doctor operating plays over it.

The Protomen 's "The Fall" is incredibly optimistic and inspiring, but in the last few moments, everything plunges downwards. Made even more stinging once you realize that the fading main guitar sounds like a typical hospital heart machine flat-lining.

Of course, as mentioned above, the story going with the song's liner notes proves that this is because Joe accidentally blew himself off the top of the radio tower after he placed the explosives at the end of his heroic climb. The final chords of "Crane Wife", a catchy balladic major song, are held and replayed until the first strains of "The Island" come in, a deep bass minor chord; there's no real break between the songs, so although "The Island" is technically its own song, it still qualifies.

While the entirety of the song is a bizarre romp into the art of making things sound simultaneously horrific and badass awesome, the song itself cuts abruptly to about 20 seconds worth of looped inhuman gurgling and honking sounds. The music video only serves to extrapolate the nightmare; mostly a trippy take on the Tortoise and the Hare story, when the LNN kicks in, the video suddenly cuts to grotesque imagery of the tortoise eating the hare. The whole song is creepy as it has a very melancholy instrumental line with vocal accompaniment played over the creak of a ship in the ocean at night, but the vocals start turning into horrified screams and you start hearing the violent rattling of a door as if someone is trying to break in to a room.

Considering the album this song is on is called "Mignonette" which is named after an English yacht that sank off of the Cape of Good Hope, this can become horrifying because the song is about the surviving people killing one of their men and eating him. Try listening to it driving at 3 in the morning by yourself as I did. It's a relaxing, soothing song for most of its duration and quite catchy.

Then, right before it ends, you hear crabs scuttling around and a woman's voice screaming out. Pretty much, it suggests that the narrator and the person they're with are also ghosts along with the one ghost they've been talking about. Kate Nash's "Skeleton Song" has a verse right before the end of a fairly poppy song where she dreams of smashing her skeleton in with a hammer, complete with screeching violins as her speech gets more guttural.

Mazzy Star 's "Into Dust" is a haunting, five-and-a-half-minute Drone of Melancholy in itself, but it ends with a discordant string riff that doesn't resolve — truly unsettling. Bis ' already creepy song "Two Million" has a fake-out ending. But then, a slow beat starts and a new song-within-a-song starts with no resemblance to the song that preceded it. The effect makes you feel like waking up from a dream, but then realizing the dream is real.

It's a fairly cheerful-sounding song, albeit one about a willful girl who drives her father into an early grave and blows her inheritance on drink. And then it suddenly slows down at the end and ends in a minor key, with Dave Mc Cabe singing 'Oh Stacey, look At the end of "Are Friends Electric 2. Klaus Nomi does this twice in a row on his first album Klaus Nomi. The otherwise calm Nomi Chant becomes a Scare Chord in its last second, and his rendition of the aria "Mon coeur c'ouvre a ta voix" from Samson and Delilah ends with what can only be described as him getting back in his space ship and taking off.

It makes sense in his live shows. Finch's "Ender" tapers off in to this kind of thing.

As you become an expert at using it, the Internet, as with other tools, becomes an extension of your brain. Are the changes occurring in your brain as you interact with the Internet good or bad for you? Adapting to the touch and feel of the Internet makes it easier to extract information, but a better question is whether the changes in your brain will improve your fitness. There was a time, no long ago, when the heads of corporations did not use the Internet because they never learned to type, but they are going extinct and have been replaced with more Internet savvy managers.

Gaining knowledge and skills should benefit survival, but not if you spend all of your time immersed in the Internet. The intermittent rewards can become addictive, hijacking your dopamine neurons that predict future rewards.

The Internet, however, has not been around long enough, and is changing too rapidly, to know what the long-term effects will be on brain function. What is the ultimate price for omniscience? My title quotes Richard Feynman, and I am using his words to express how the Internet is providing not only information about our world, but also making available the means to understand it in a deep sense.

The increased use of the computer in scientific research, from simple data analysis to simulations, means the ability to recreate and verify facts for oneself is very real, as scientists can release the complete software environment and data required to reproduce their results on the Internet.

The Internet is opening this possibility to society at large for the first time. If our home computing power or disk space is insufficient, the Internet connects us to massive computing power such as the Teragrid or the cloud. We are posed to empower our own decision making through Internet-based verification of what we believe, important for self-determination but also for the validity of the computational results themselves. The result is a change in how I expect to understand the world.

Data analysis has risen as an intellectual force of its own, with implications for how we accept new knowledge as facts. In John Tukey first proposed data analysis as a field in its own right and split the field of statistics in two. At that time, statistics was synonymous with mathematical analysis and the Information Age was only just beginning.

Tukey foresaw the coming data deluge and that the traditional machinery of mathematical statistics, such as hypothesis testing and confidence statements, had relatively little to offer for these new problems.

There was an enormous amount of analysis to be done on vast amounts of data, and insisting on mathematics ran the risk of missing important findings. Now, data analysis is presenting challenging mathematical questions and we are running that same risk in reverse.

When awash in data it is common to use the following three-step investigative method: a new phenomenon is found in the data, followed by an analysis strategy justified on heuristic grounds, and then some computational examples of apparent success are provided. This approach makes it nearly impossible to derive the deeper intellectual understanding that the mathematical framework is geared to uncover. Our basic tools of modern data analysis, from regression to principal components, were developed by scientists working squarely in the mathematical tradition, and are based on theorems and analysis.

As the Internet facilitates a national hobby of data analysis, our thinking about scientific discovery is no longer typically in the intellectual tradition of mathematics. This tradition, and the area of my training, defines a meaningful investigation as involving a formal definition of the phenomenon of interest, stated carefully in a mathematical model, and use of a strategy for analysis that follows logically from the model.

It is accompanied at every step by efforts to show how the opportunity for error and mistakes has been minimized. As data analysts we must have the same high standards for transparency in our findings, and consequently I am pushing my thinking toward deeper intellectual rigor, more in line with the mathematical tradition and less in line with the data analysis tradition so facilitated by the Internet. Mathematics has been developing responses to the ubiquity of error for hundreds of years, resulting in formal logic and the mathematical proof.

Computation is similarly highly error-prone, but recent enough to still be developing equivalent standards of openness and collective verification. An essential response is reproducibility of results: the release of code and data that generated the computational findings we'd like to consider as a contribution to society's stock of knowledge. This subjects computational research to the same standards of openness as filled by the role of the proof in mathematics. The Internet has changed how I think about science, and how to identify it.

Today most computational results aren't accompanied by their underlying code and data, and my opening description of being able to recreate results for oneself is not commonplace. But I believe this will become typical - the draw of verifying what we know for ourselves and being less reliant on the conclusions of others has remained evident in our long search for truth about our world.

This seems a natural evolution from a state of knowledge derived from mystical sources with little ability to question and verify, through a science-facing society still with an epistemological gulf between scientist and non-scientist.

Now, the Internet allows more of our understanding to seep from the ivory tower, closing that gulf and empowering us to know things for ourselves and changing our expectations about what it means to live in an open, data-driven, society. So I've taken the liberty of interpreting the question more broadly, in the form "How should the Internet, or its descendants, affect how people like me think?

If controversies were to arise, there would be no more need of disputation between two philosophers than between two accountants. For it would suffice to take their pencils in their hands, to sit down to the slates, and to say to each other with a friend as witness, if they liked : "Let us calculate.

Clearly Leibniz was wrong here, for without disputation philosophers would cease to be philosophers. And it is difficult to see how any amount of calculation could settle, for example, the question of free will. But if we replace, in Leibniz' visionary program, "sculptors of material reality" for "philosophers", then we arrive at an accurate description of an awesome opportunity — and an unanswered challenge — that faces us today. This opportunity began to take shape roughly eighty years ago, as the equations of quantum theory reached maturity.

The underlying physical laws necessary for the mathematical theory of a large part of physics and the whole of chemistry are thus completely known, and the difficulty is only that the exact application of these laws leads to equations much too complicated to be soluble.

Dirac Much has happened in physics since Dirac's declaration. Physicists have found new equations that reach into the heart of atomic nuclei. High-energy accelerators have exposed new worlds of unexpected phenomena and tantalizing hints of Nature's ultimate beauty and symmetry. Thanks to that new fundamental understanding we understand how stars work, and how a profoundly simple but profoundly alien fireball evolved into universe we inhabit today. Yet Dirac's bold claim holds up; while the new developments provide reliable equations for smaller objects and more extreme conditions than we could handle before, they haven't changed the rules of the game for ordinary matter under ordinary conditions.

On the contrary, the triumphant march of quantum theory far beyond its original borders strengthens our faith in its soundness. What even Dirac probably did not foresee, and what transforms his philosophical reflection of into a call to arms today, is that the limitation of being "much too complicated to be soluble" could be challenged. With today's chips and architectures, we can start to solve the equations for chemistry and materials science.

By orchestrating the power of billions of tomorrow's chips, linked through the Internet or its successors, we should be able to construct virtual laboratories of unprecedented flexibility and power. Instead of mining for rare ingredients, refining, cooking, and trying various combinations scattershot, we will explore for useful materials more easily and systematically, by feeding multitudes of possibilities, each defined by a few lines of code, into a world-spanning grid of linked computers.

What might such a world-grid discover? Some not unrealistic possibilities: friendlier high-temperature superconductors, that would enable lossless power transmission, levitated supertrains, and computers that aren't limited by the heat they generate ; super-efficient photovoltaics and batteries, that would enable cheap capture and flexible use of solar energy, and wean us off carbon burning; super-strong materials, that could support elevators running directly from Earth to space.

The prospects we can presently foresee, exciting as they are, could be overmatched by discoveries not yet imagined. Beyond technological targets, we can aspire to a comprehensive survey of physical reality's potential. InFeynman posed this challenge:.

We cannot say whether something beyond it like God is needed, or not. And so we can all hold strong opinions either way. Feynman How far can we see today? Not all the way to frogs or to musical composers at least not good onesfor sure. In fact only very recently did physicists succeed in solving the equations of quantum chromodynamics QCD to calculate a convincing proton, by using the fastest chips, big networks, and tricky algorithms.

That might sound like a paltry beginning, but it's actually an encouraging show of strength, because the equations of QCD are much more complicated than the equations of quantum chemistry. And we've already been able to solve those more tractable equations well enough to guide several revolutions in the material foundations of microelectronics, laser technology, and magnetic imaging.

But all these computational adventures, while impressive, are clearly warm-up exercises. To make a definitive leap into artificial reality, we'll need both Nothing Else - Various - Dots And Pearls (Vinyl) ingenuity and more computational power.

Players of this kind, once created, would scale up smoothly to overwhelming strength, simply by tapping into ever larger resources. In the more difficult game of calculating quantum reality we, with the help of our silicon friends, presently play like weak masters. We know the rules, and make some good moves, but we often substitute guesswork for calculation, we miss inspired possibilities, and we take too long doing it.

To do much better we'll need to make the dream of a world-GRID into a working reality. We'll need to find better ways of parceling out subtasks in ways that don't require intense communication, better ways of exploiting the locality of the underlying equations, and better ways of building in physical insight, to prune the solution space.

These issues have not received the attention they deserve, in my opinion. Many people with the requisite training and talent feel it's worthier to discover new equations, however esoteric, than to solve equations we already have, however important their application. People respond to the rush of competition and the joy of the hunt. Some well-designed prizes for milestone achievements in the simulation of matter could have a big impact, by focusing attention and a bit of glamour toward this tough but potentially glorious endeavor.

How about, for example, a prize for calculating virtual water that boils at the right temperature? The Internet has made it far easier for professionals to access and search the scientific literature. Unfortunately, it has also increased the chances that we will lose part or all of that literature.

When I was young, I imagined that everything I wrote would be preserved forever. Future biographers would seek out every letter, diary and memorandum to capture the essence of my creativity. My first laboratory notebook still captured the same emotions. On page one I had printed, very legibly, the following preface: "To Posterity: This volume contains the authentic record of ingenious and original chemical research conducted by Robert Shapiro, currently a graduate student of organic chemistry at Harvard University.

Reality gradually whittled down my grandiosity, and I recognized that my published papers had the best chance of survival. The New York University library carried bound journals that dated from the 19th century, and the articles thay contained had obviously outlived their authors.

As the number of my own published works grew, curiosity chose me to select one of them and track its impact.

I deliberately picked one of minor importance. A generation ago, a persistant PhD student and I had failed in an effort to synthesize a new substance of theoretical interest. We had however prepared some other new compounds and improved some methods, so I wrote a paper that was published in in The Journal of Organic Chemisty.

Had our results ever mattered to anyone? Using new computer-driven search tools, I could quickly check whether it had had ever been noticed. To my surprise, I found that 11 papers and some patents had cited our publication, up to In one instance, our work provided a starting point for the preparation of new tranquilizers.

I imagined that in the distant future, other workers might pull the appropriate volume off a library shelf and find my work to be some help. I did not forsee that such bound volumes might no longer exist. The Journal of Organic Chemistry started inand continues up to the present. Its demands on library shelf space have increased over time: the first volume contained only pages, while the edition had The arrival of the Internet rescued libraries from the space crisis created by the proliferation of new journals and the vast increase in the size of existing ones.

Many paper subscriptions were replaced by electronic ones, and past holdings were converted to digital form. It is not hard to imagine a future time when paper copies of the scientific literature will no longer exist. Many new journals are appearing only in digital form. This conversion has produced many benefits for readers. In the past I had to leave my office, ride an elevator, walk several blocks, take another elevator, and make my way through a maze of shelves to find a paper that I needed.

Occasionally, the issue I wanted was being used by someone else or had been misplaced, and I had traveled in vain. Now I can bring most papers that I want onto a computer screen in my office or at home in a matter of minutes.

I can store the publication in my computer, or print out a copy if I wish. But with this gain in the accessibility of the literature of science has come an increase in its vulnerability.

Materials that exist in one or a few copies are inherently at greater risk than those that are widely distributed. A Picasso painting might be destroyed but the Bible will survive. Alexander Stille in The Future of the Pastreported that the works of Homer and Virgil survived from antiquity because their great popularity lead them to be copied and recopied.

On the other hand, only 9 of Sophocles plays have survived. Before the Internet came into play, I could take pride that my each of my papers was present in hundreds or thousands of libraries across the globe. Its survival into the future was enhanced by the protection afforded by multiple copies. The same applies, of course to the remainder of the scientific literature. Thousands of paper copies of the literature have now been replaced by a few electronic records stored in computers.

Furthermore, the storage medium is fragile. Some paper manuscripts have survived for centuries. The lifetimes of the various discs, drives and tapes currently used for digital storage are unknown, but are commonly estimated in decades. In some cases, works available only in electronic form have disappeared much more rapidly for another reason — lack of maintenance of the sites. Such difficulties are unlikely to affect prestigious sources such as the Journal of Organic Chemistry.

But material stored only on the Internet is far more vulnerable to destruction than the same material present in multiple paper copies. Electrical breakdown can disrupt access for a time, while cyberterrorism, civic disturbances, war and a variety of natural catastrophes could destroy part ar all of the storage system, leading to the irretrievable loss of sections of the scientific literature.

Anton Zeilinger wrote in a previous edition of this series that a nuclear explosion outside the earth's atmosphere would cause all computers, and ultimately society, to break down. How has this changed my thinking? I no longer write with the expectation of immortality in print.

I am much more tempted to contribute to Internet discussion forums, blogs, and media which may not persist. I seek my reward from the immediate response that my efforts may bring, with little thought to the possibility that some stranger may see my words centuries from now, and wonder about the life that was led by the person who wrote them.

I used to think that the problem of information is that it turns homo sapiens into fools — we gain disproportionately in confidence, particularly in domains where information is wrapped in a high degree of noise say, epidemiology, genetics, economics, etc. So we end up thinking that we know more than we do, which, in economic life, causes foolish risk taking. When I started trading, I went on a news diet and I saw things with more clarity. I also saw how people built too many theories based on sterile news, the fooled by randomness effect.

But things are a lot worse. Now I think that, in addition, the supply and spread of information turns the world into Extremistan a world I describe as one in which random variables are dominated by extremes, with Black Swans playing a large role in them. The Internet, by spreading information, causes an increase in interdependence, the exacerbation of fads bestsellers like Harry Potter and runs on the banks become planetary.

Such world is more "complex", more moody, much less predictable. So consider the explosive situation: more information particularly thanks to the Internet causes more confidence and illusions of knowledge while degrading predictability. Look at this current economic crisis that started in there are about a million persons on the planet who identify themselves in the field of economics. Yet just a handful realized the possibility and depth of what could have taken place and protected themselves from the consequences.

At no time in the history of mankind have we lived under so much ignorance easily measured in terms of forecast errors coupled with so much intellectual hubris. At no point have we had central bankers missing elementary risk metrics, like debt levels, that even the Babylonians understood well.

I recently talked to a scholar of rare wisdom and erudition, Jon Elster, who upon exploring themes from social science, integrates insights from all authors in the corpus of the past years, from Cicero and Seneca, to Montaigne and Proust. He showed me how Seneca had a very sophisticated understanding of loss aversion. I felt guilty for the time I spent on the Internet.

Upon getting home I found in my mail a volume of posthumous essays by bishop Pierre-Daniel Huet called Huetianaput together by his admirers c. It is so saddening to realize that, being born close to four centuries after Huet, and having done most of my reading with material written after his death, I am not much more advanced in wisdom than he was — moderns at the upper end are no wiser than their equivalent among the ancients; if anything, much less refined.

So I am now on an Internet diet, in order to understand the world a bit better — and make another bet on horrendous mistakes by economic policy makers. I am not entirely deprived of the Internet; this is just a severe diet, with strict rationing. True, technologies are the greatest things in the world, but they have way too monstrous side effects — and ones rarely seen ahead of time. And since spending time in the silence of my library, with little informational pollution, I can feel harmony with my genes; I feel I am growing again.

Use of the Internet has not changed the way that I think, but it is making a unique contribution by providing me with immediate and convenient access to an extraordinary range of ideas and information. This development can be considered as a natural extension to the sequence that began with tablets of clay, continued through papyrus, parchment, handwritten manuscripts on paper to the recent mass produced books printed on paper. Happily the Internet provides us with access to many of these earlier forms of the written word as well as to electronic communications.

Access to information and ideas has always been important for both personal development and progress of a community or nation. As a school boy, when I first became interested in facts and ideas my family were living in an industrial part of the north of England and at that time I made great use of a public library.

The library was part of an industrial village established by a philanthropic entrepreneur who made his money by importing Alpacas' cashmere-like fleece and weaving fine clothes. Alpacas are members of the camelid family found in the Andes of Peru and Chile. He provided not only houses, a hospital, but schools and a technical college, and the library. I took it for granted that libraries which provided access to books, most of which could be borrowed and taken home, were available everywhere.

This is still not the case, but in the near future the Internet may provide an equivalent opportunity for people everywhere. Whereas libraries have been established in most major societies, it is only in the recent past that they have been made generally available to ordinary citizens. One of the earliest libraries for which records remain is the Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt which was founded around BC by pharaoh Ptolemy I.

It grew to hold several hundred thousand scrolls, some of which are said to have been taken from boats that happened to dock at Alexandria while carrying out their trade. The library contributed to the establishment of Alexandria as a major seat of learning.

Sadly the library was destroyed by fire. Never the less it represented a particular landmark in the development of the concept of a library as a collection of books to provide a reservoir of knowledge, that should be staffed by specific keepers whose tasks included expansion of the collection. Other similar libraries were established during this period, including those at Ephesus in Turkey and Sankore in Timbuktu. During the period of the Roman Empire wealthy and influential people continued the practice of establishing libraries, most of which were open only to scholars with the appropriate qualifications.

A survey in AD identified 29 libraries in Rome, but as the Empire declined the habit of establishing and maintaining libraries was lost. The development of monasteries provided a renewed stimulus for learning. They amassed book collections and introduced the habit of exchanging volumes.

Recognizing the importance of learning the Benedictine rules required that monks spent specified periods of time reading. As Europe emerged from the Dark Ages wealthy families again began to collect books and then donate their libraries to seats of learning in places such as Florence, Paris, Vatican City and Oxford. All of these libraries depended upon the copying of text by hand and it was only the development of printing by Gutenberg in the s that production of books was transformed they were much more readily available.

During the period to there was an extraordinary expansion of libraries, by universities and nations. Some of these were named after major benefactors, such as the Bodlean Library in Oxford and the library donated by the Massachusetts clergyman John Harvard, after whom the university is named. In the United States the Library of Congress was founded in and after a fire during the War of Independence its stock was replenished by the purchase of the collection that had been amassed by Thomas Jefferson.

The Library of Congress now claims to be the largest library in the world with more than million items. It was also during this period that public libraries became more common and books became more generally available for the first time. In some cases subscriptions were used to purchase books, but there was no charge for subsequent loans. One such was the Library Company of Philadelphia established by a group that included Benjamin Franklin in The oldest surviving free reference library in the United Kingdom, Chetham's, was established in Manchester in It was at this time that the UK parliament passed an Act to promote the formation of Public Libraries.

In the United States the first free public library was only formed inin New Hampshire. The Scots born entrepreneur Andrew Carniegie went on to build more than 1, public libraries in the US between and These libraries were the first to make large numbers of books available to the general public.

Of course books are only valuable to those who have access to them, can read and are encouraged to do so. Often reading was associated with religion as knowledge of the sacred scripture was important. In England around the ability to read a particular Psalm entitled a defendant to be tried in an ecclesiastical court, which was typically more lenient than a civil court.

In some places funds were allocated specifically to teach people to read the scriptures, but this provision was not always available universally.

At the time of the civil war in the US owners were prohibited from teaching their slaves to read and write. Knowledge accumulated over centuries of human experience is an important counter to fashions of the moment communicated through commercial mass media. It is hard to imagine that making each of us aware of the circumstances and beliefs of people in other parts of the world can do anything but good.

We would surely be more likely to assist countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq to form liberal democracies by helping to provide education, training, employment and so wealth and greater understanding than by military take over, which inevitably causes a very large numbers of civilian casualties and a great deal of damage.

There is one cautionary note. Texts of any kind, be they on parchment or available through electronic systems, are only as useful as they are accurate.

In the days when books were prepared by hand the accuracy of scribes was recognized as being of paramount importance. In a rather different way, but of equal importance, we depend upon the rigor of the research done by those whose electronically reproduced articles we read.

In academia especially, but in other careers as well most notably politics and corporate businessyour name, money, connections, social standing, religion, and especially which institutions you are affiliated with do seem to matter…a lot.

Pure skill and talent, while important, often seem to play second fiddle in the orchestral arrangement of society. The Internet is changing this. Thanks to the Internet, for the first time in my life I feel that I have a chance to compete on a level playing field. My academic background is embarrassing compared to that of most successful intellectuals.

My public high school education was so abysmal that I had to attend to a community college in California for two years before matriculating at the then reputationless Pepperdine University. I scraped together a master's degree through the second-tier California State University system, and finally gave up hope for an intellectual life and raced bikes for a decade. By the time I earned a Ph. Since teaching as an adjunct professor is no way to make a living literallyI founded the Skeptics Society andSkeptic magazine just as the Internet was getting legs in the earlys.

Starting with no money, no backers, and no affiliation with elite institutions, the Internet made it possible for us to succeed by making knowledge accessible and searchable to me and my editors and writers on a scale never previously available. The intellectual playing field was being leveled and the Internet changed the way I think about the very real possibility of fairness and opportunity in a world that has for too long been rigged to favor the elite. Who needs brick and mortar libraries when knowledge is available at fingertips' notice?

Who needs acceptance into elite universities when the same knowledge is searchable by anyone from anywhere? Who needs access to exclusive clubs when knowledge is no longer the province of just the privileged?

We're not all the way there yet, but the Internet is leveling the knowledge playing field by democratizing access to information. The first bit is wholly unsurprising: the Internet was designed for people like me, by people like me, most of them English speakers. Fundamentally reflecting western, rationalist, objective, data-organizing drives, the Internet simply enhances my ability to think in familiar ways, letting me work longer, more often, with better focus, free from the social tyranny of the library and the uncertainty of postmen.

The Internet has changed what I think, however — most notably about where the human race is now headed. From a prehistorian's perspective, I judge that we have been returned to a point last occupied at the time of our evolutionary origin.

This is what I mean:. When the first stone tool was chipped, over two millon years ago, it signalled a new way of being. The ancestral community learned to make flint axes, and those first artificial objects, in turn, critically framed a shared, reflective consciousness that began to express itself in language. An axe could be both made and said, used and asked for. The invention of technology brought the earliest unitary template for human thought into being.

It can even be argued that it essentially created us as characteristically human. What happened next is well known: technology accelerated adaptation. The original ancestral human culture spread out across continents and morphed into cultures, plural — myriad ways of being.

While isolated groups drifted into ever greater idiosyncracy, those who found themselves in competition for the same resources consciously strove to differentiate themselves from their neighbours. This ever deepening cultural specificity facilited the dehumanization of enemies that successful warfare, driven by jealously guarded technological innovation, required. Then reunification began, starting five thousand years ago, with the development of writing — a technology that allowed the transcription of difference.

War was not over, but alien thoughts did begin to be translated, at first very approximately, across the boundaries of local incomprehension. The mature Internet marks the completion of this process, and thus the reemergence of a fully contiguous human cultural landscape. We now have the same capacity for being united under a common language and shared technology that our earliest human ancestors had.

So, in a crucial sense, we are back at the beginning, returned into the presence of a shared template for human thought. From now on, there are vanishingly few excuses for remaining ignorant of objective scientific facts, and ever thinner grounds for cultivating hatred through willful failure to recognize our shared humanity. Respecting difference has its limits, however: the fact of our knowing that there is a humanity to share means we must increasingly work towards agreeing common moral standards.

The Internet means that there is nowhere to hide and no way to shirk responsibility when the whole tribe makes informed decisions as it now must about its shared future. The Internet has been in majority use in the developed world for less than a decade, but we can already see some characteristic advantages dramatically improved access to information, very large scale collaborations and disadvantages interrupt-driven thought, endless distractions.

It's tempting to try to adjudicate the relative value of the network on the way we think by deciding whether access to Wikipedia outweighs access to tentacle porn or the other way around.

Unfortunately for us, though, the intellectual fate of our historical generation is unlikely to matter much in the long haul. It is our misfortune to live through the largest increase in expressive capability in the history of the human race, a misfortune because surplus always breaks more things than scarcity. Scarcity means valuable things become more valuable, a conceptually easy change to integrate. Compositions have the ambition of trying to breach boundaries of music and generally have significant experimental approaches to metal music.

Most of this music borders on the realms of pure avant-garde while still maintaining a solid foundation in metal with technical instrumental prowess.

Post Metal Post metal arose following the subsequent emergence of numerous newer, grittier metal genres like sludge, stoner, doom, and drone in the late 80's and early 90's, as well as the budding post-rock scene that emerged in the early 90's in Europe and North America.

Arguably the first true and definitive realizations of post-metal emerged in the mid 's. The most concrete example was NEUROSIS, who moved farther away from their crust-punk origins and into more atmospheric territories with releases like Souls at Zero and Through Silver in Blood, the latter album in particular being regarded as one of the most definitive releases in the genre even to this day for its revolutionary blend of dark, spanning atmosphere and massively heavy sludge, something that would later come to define the post-metal genre as a whole indeed, post-metal is often called "atmospheric sludge" as well.

Post-metal's unique sound is often very long and extremely drawn-out, utilizing oft-repetitive and simple riffs and guitar texturing to create massive buildups and musical climaxes. At times very emotionally evocative, it can be equally soft and soothing as it can be massively dense and crushing. Variations of Post-metal While it should be noted that many post-metal bands have their roots in sludge metal, there are many post-metal bands that are rooted in other genres of metal.

A number of post-metal bands are significantly influenced by hardcore and post-hardcore, crafting the melodic elements of modern hardcore into their own brands of textural and atmospheric post-metal. A subgenre that has emerged to a considerable degree in the last decade is an amalgamation of post-rock and black metal. While the explosion of bands exploring this style is a rather recent phenomenon, there are some instances of this occurring very early in the lifespan of the post-metal genre as a whole.

ULVER's debut could be seen as possibly the first album to fall under this definition. Heavy Prog defines progressive rock music that draws as much influence from hard rock as it does from classic progressive rock. The electric guitar, amplified to produce distortion or 'overdrive' is a crucial element, providing the 'heavy' tone required for this aggressive style, and later for the British and North American heavy metal of the late s and 80s.

Although certain other acts, such as King Crimson and Jethro Tull, utilize a heavy guitar, bass and keyboard sound, the bulk of their work over the years puts them in a different category. The emotion provided by this music is not only "affective". It's a real message, an aesthetic of the nature, of the divine, a virtue able to guide the listener to a state of emotional trance.

In the mid's with the launch of international success of raga masters as Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan. European and American artists will become more and more captivated by the dynamical relation between mystical emotion, spirituality and music. The emergence of Raga schools from everywhere still perpetuating the ancestral musical traditionsthe initiatic travels of Western minimalist-modern jazz composers Terry Riley, Don Cherry The emphasis on repetitive circular rhythms, ornamentation gamakathe use of acoustic stringed patterns, the sense of beatific endurance and lenghty improvisation are the central characteristics of this music in term of practice and sound aesthetism.

Emotionally, the function on the listener is hypnotic, voluntary trying to reach him into a higher state of consciousness, modulating his perception of time and space. The basic conception of "drone" continuous sound form will be taken back in popular music and turned into "kosmische" electronica 70's Berlin underground.

After Seventh sons' first original but rather discreet effort simply called "raga" and Malachi's holy musicfamous bands as the Beatles in "Revolver" and Traffic in their album "Mr Fantasy" will be seduced by the sonorities of Indian raga music. They occasionally incorporate sitar elements to their music. Among the most notorious artists who participate to the original dialogue between proggy rock and Indian music we can notice many jazzy formed musicians influenced by "world" elements the guitarists Volker Krieger, Steve Tibbetts, the clarinet player Tony Scott.

They are often recognised to practice a fusion between jazz rock harmonies and raga's instrumentations tabla, sitar. Jazz Fusion is jazz that is strongly influenced by other styles of music. Jazz fusion is an ambiguous term that provides the first level sub-set down from Jazz.

Jazz rock is a sub-sub set from jazz via jazz fusion. The ambiguity comes from an American tendency through the 90's and until now, to freely interchange jazz rock and jazz fusion, when in fact the latter term covers most hybrids of jazz fused with other forms of music. The roots of jazz rock can be traced back to RnB influenced soul-jazz artists such as Les McCann, Grant Green and Jimmy Smith, and young British jazzers such as Graham Bond, Ginger Baker, John McLaughlin, Jack Bruce, Georgie Fame, who were forced to use electronic instruments because the local club's acoustic instruments were reserved for the older established jazz musicians.

Meanwhile rock artists such as Cream, Grateful Dead and The Jimi Hendrix Experience were getting a lot of publicity and fame with their lengthy improvisations based on blues, rock, psychedelia and some jazz. These rock artists had an impact on Miles Davis who generated a lot of media attention to this new jazz-rock genre with his Bitches Brew album. From there the genre grew and exploded into numerous different directions. These bands combined elements of jazz, rock and classical music with arrangements for brass and woodwinds.

Many other styles of music have been combined with jazz to create fusion including traditional music from around the world, R'n'B, rock, electronic music and pop music and jazz from Africa, Latin America, India and other places.

One of the earliest examples of the use of the term fusion comes from the Indo-jazz fusion of Joe Harriott and John Mayer. Some of the more popular early practitioners of fusion included Weather Report and Herbie Hancock's Sextant.

It was intended to go beyond the eccentricities developed by the wild psychedelic rock universe of the US, by giving a special emphasis to electronic treatments, sound manipulation and minimal hypnotic motifs continuing the style of "musique concrete" and minimalist repetitive music but within a more accessible environment.

Krautrock put the emphasis on extended and ecstatic instrumental epics, neglecting the format of conventional psych-pop songs. The term Krautrock was first used by the British music press in a very derogatory way. The term rapidly found a better reputation in underground music circles and finally gained a certain popularity thanks to the Brain-Festival Essen With their own particular artistic expression, these musical collectives provided rocking psychedelic incantations, mantra like drones, melancholic lugubrious atmospheres, long and convoluted collective improvisations, binary repetitive drum pulses, fuzz guitars, feedback, primitive electronic noises, hallucinatory ballads, and garage blues rock trips.

Krautrock can be described as an anarchic, intense, acid, tellurian, nocturnal, spacey, dark and oniric "adventure" through rock music. The most consistent years of the Krautrock scene cover a relatively short period from to After their first spontaneous, hyperactive and psychedelic efforts, the bands generally split up or declined into other musical sensibilities, more in line with mainstream rock or with ambient soundscapes. Each region develops its particular musical scene, interpreting differently the Krautrock musical structure.

Neo-Progressive rock more commonly "Neo-Prog" is a subgenre of Progressive Rock that originally was used to describe artists strongly influenced by the classic symphonic prog bands that flourished during the s. At the beginning of the neo-prog movement, the primary influence was early to mid's Genesis. Debate over when Neo-Prog actually came into being often takes place, with some asserting it began with Marillion's Script for a Jester's Tear in Others contend it began with Twelfth Night at the dawn of the 80s, while some even suggest the popular symphonic prog band Genesis gave rise to Neo-Prog with their album, A Trick of the Tail.

This new form of progressive rock originated in the UK, and is most strongly associated with bands such as Marillion, Pendragon and IQ; and while theatrical stage antics were a part of the live performances of many artists exploring this subset of the progressive rock genre it's the musical elements that are key to the genre; typified by the use of atmospheric guitar and synth soloing with symphonic leanings, with a tendency towards floating synth layers and dreamy soloing.

An additional trait is the use of modern synths rather than vintage analogue synths and keyboards. The main reasons for Neo-Progressive artists to be separated from the ones exploring Symphonic Prog in the first place are the above, as well as a heavier emphasis on song-form and melody than some of their earlier symphonic counterparts. As time went by other artists appeared that also deviated from the norms created by the classic wave of progressive rock artists in the 70's.

The late 70's had given the world punk music; the 80's gave the world new wave; and the 90's grunge. These, as well as other forms, had a tremendous amount of influence outside of the progressive rock realm. The advent of the modern synth also inspired artists like Tomita, Vangelis and Kitaro to explore dreamier musical works.

These and other forms of more or less newly made musical genres influenced artists exploring progressive rock as well. Although many artists did so within the framework of 70's progressive rock, more and more artists developed a sound and style so heavily influenced by these more recent musical developments that categorizing them within the existing subgenres of progressive rock became increasingly difficult.

While the Neo-Progressive genre initially consisted of artists exploring a modernized version of Symphonic Prog, these days artists coined as Neo-Progressive cover a multitude of musical expressions, where the common denominator is the inclusion - within a progressive rock framework - of musical elements developed just prior to and after The Neo-Progressive genre in it's refined form thus covers a vast musical territory, to some extent covering all existing subsets of progressive rock and also searching out towards genres as different Nothing Else - Various - Dots And Pearls (Vinyl) new age on one side and punk and metal on the other.

POST-ROCK : The term post-rock was coined by Simon Reynolds in issue of The Wire May to describe a sort of music "using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbres and textures rather than riffs and powerchords. Closely related to post-rock is the genre known as Math rock, characterized by more percussive timbres, and more dissonant harmonic gestures. It uses material from the Wikipedia article "Post-rock". The music is characterized by complex structures, angular melodies and constant abrupt changes in tempo and time signature. The name Math Rock is a term that grew out of the Chicago scene and the artists working with engineer Steve Albini in an effort to describe the new style. The basic building blocks of Math Rock can be traced back to the late 60's and 70's where Progressive Rock artists were making more elaborate compositions than the standard rock bands and were experimenting with song structures.

Early Avant-garde groups like Massacre, and artists such as Captain Beefheart and John Zorn were highly influential to Math Rock bands and traces of their music can still be heard throughout the genre. Another big influence to the Math Rock approach was Slint with their album "Spiderland" which showcased many techniques that Math Rock bands will follow in the future.

Punk also had significant impact on the sound of Math Rock bands. Although there are Math Rock bands in different countries around the world, most reside in the United States, the Midwest in particular, and tend Nothing Else - Various - Dots And Pearls (Vinyl) be divided by regions: Pittsburgh bands Don Caballero, Six Horse Chicago bands Shellac, U.

Byall of the glorious precursors bands were selling fewer records and had problems renewing themselves and a newer generation of groups was relying in a more Celtic jigs or really traditional sounds. There is also a very important medieval music influences dimension in some groups as the term Medieval Folk was also mentioned for a while but apparently dropped by musicologists.

No musical genre exists in a vacuum. Not all of the bands that have been a part of the history and development of progressive rock are necessarily progressive rock bands themselves. This is why progarchives has included a genre called prog-related, so we could include all the bands that complete the history of progressive rock, whether or not they were considered full-fledged progressive rock bands themselves.

There are many criteria that the prog-related evaluation team considers when deciding which bands are considered prog-related. Very few bands will meet all of this criteria, but this list will give an idea as to some of the things that help evaluate whether an artists is prog-related or not. Although both of these artists created rock music in a dizzying array of genres, both contributed to the ongoing history of progressive rock several times within the span of their careers.

It may surprise some people that as late as the mids the US had very few original progressive rock bands that did not sound like exact copies of British bands.

Journey was one of the first US bands to present a uniquely American brand of prog-rock before they eventually became a mainstream rock band. We have collaborators from all over the world who tell us which bands helped the progressive rock scene develop in their corner of the globe, even if those bands were like Journey and were known more for being mainstream rock bands. In the late 70s and early 80s prog-rock was barely a blip on the radar. During this time artists such as David Bowie and Metallica released albums that captured key elements of the spirit of prog rock and did so while contributing their own original modern elements to the mix.

Although Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Wishbone Ash may seem like mere hard rock bands, in their time they stood apart from other hard rockers with their more serious lyrical content and more developed compositions. Put simply, in the early 70s every prog-rock record collector usually had full collections of all three of these artists. These three bands were very much part of the prog-rock scene without being total prog-rock bands them selves.

Once again, as we enter the second decade of the 21st century a melting pot of prog-metal, math-rock, progressive electronics and post-rock influences have once again made a progressive tendency in rock music almost more a norm than a difference.

Yet in other periods of musical history receiving influence from progressive rock could really set a band apart and make them worthy of our prog-related category. Being influenced by progressive rock is hardly the only factor we look at, and in some periods of musical history it is almost meaningless, but still, it is almost a given that most of the artists listed in prog-related were influenced by the development of progressive rock. Sometimes you just have to use some common sense and look at the big picture.

A very good way to describe prog-related would be to imagine an exhaustive book that covered the history of progressive rock. Probably so. Born in the late 60's after the expansion of avant-gardist, modern, post-modern and minimalist experimentation, the progressive electronic movement immediately guides us into a musical adventure around technologies and new possibilities for composition.

As an author or a searcher, the musician often creates his own modules and electronic combinations, deciding his own artistic and musical action. The visionary works of Stockhausen, Subotnick, John Cage "concrete" music, electro-acoustic experimentationLa Monte Young, Steve Reich, Terry Riley minimal, micro-tonal music express a vision of total reconstruction in the current musical world.

Luminous works such as "A Rainbow in Curved Air" and "Silver Apples of the Moon" bring an inflexion on opened forms and new ways to explore the essence and the physical aspects of sounds through time and space. A great improvement happened in with the appearance of the first modular synthesiser Moog.

This material or "invention" brings the answer to the technological aspirations of many musicians, mainly after the release of the popular "Switched on Bach" Walter Carlos and Mother Mallard's portable masterpiece pieces composed between At the beginning of popular essays in electronica, the pioneering technologies in term of recording and sound transmission will not be abandoned. After several innovations always from Germany we notice the dark, doomy atmospheric manifests of Nekropolis Peter Frohmader in "Le culte des Goules"Asmus Tietchens in his colourful and engaged "Biotop" and the semi-ambient "Hermeneutic Music" by Lars Troschen sound sculptor and synthesist.

Young contemporary bands and artists in electronic experimentation took their inspiration from the 70's "kosmische" analog synth psychedelica of Klaus Schulze, Conrad Schnitzler, Tangerine Dream, etc. To sum up things, the progressive electronic subgenre is dedicated to intricate, moving, cerebral, intrusive electronic experiences that get involved in "kosmische", dark ambient, post industrial, droning, surreal or impressionist soundscapes territories.

This category represents the core movement of what is called "Progressive Metal" in the literal sense. It is a subgenre of progressive rock as much as it is a subgenre of heavy metal, and this is how its sound is defined: a blend of heavy, guitar-oriented metal music enriched with compositional innovation and complex arrangements, usually expressed through diverse instrumentation and often but not always with odd-time signatures.

Common, but not essential to define the movement, are the frequent use of keyboards, high-pitched vocals, concept lyrical themes and tracks of longer duration.

The Origins: The heavy sound of some of the progressive rock bands of the 70's has been one of the building blocks on which progressive metal was raised. The former were essentially playing progressive metal as ASLAN in the mid's and developed a highly eclectic sound in the 90's.

The latter's debut classifies them among the European prog-thrash pioneers but their music evolved to more melodic patterns and heavily influenced by RUSH in the early 90's. Progressive metal is difficult to further divide in sub-genres but a number of tendencies or movements have been critical to the evolvement of its sound.

We have several powder colorants in our shop that may be of help. What if i use a wet poIisher, would that permit me to reach the high gloss with epoxy resin and marble dust?

I was figuring the water would keep the temperature lower and not afect the resin. It would be worth a try, but make sure the resin is very hard and fully cured first.

The backing on the tray is fiberboard and I want to fill each section with some beach pebbles.

I would like to know what you think would be the best way to adhere them to each section…. I would probably glue them in. I would suggest the Alumilite Amazing Clear Cast epoxy resin. I was just given a dremel mototool. When I put the cloth circle to the resin it immediately scraped a large scuff onto the top of the piece!

Instead of looking smooth and glossy, it will look a little frosted underneath. Without seeing your scratch, I would try to sand it down, finishing with at least a grit paper or higher. If you were going to try casting them in an acrylic sided mold, you would definitely need to use mold release. Resin will stick to acrylic. I wanna find the limit of what one person can do from home without the fancy machines and without creating a chemical melt down disaster in ones garge.

Ill check up. It may be that the resin is reacting with something on the surface of your painting. I would suggest sealing the entire piece with a layer of an acrylic based spray first.

Hi Miss Katherine! I am so excited about finding this forum. I have been working on a round table for my mom for longer that I care to admit.

I have sanded it, gel stained it, sanded it again bc gel stain streaks, polyurethane unsuccessfully, stripped all of that off…got back to square one. Looked beautiful except of the dust particles and a couple of mosquitoes that dipped into also. So I began wet sanding it after it cured for a couple of weeks. Today I have wet sanded with a little soapy water with grit, cleaned, grit, cleaned, and grit.

The epoxy is very smooth an free from any blemishes at this time. Will that work to give me a polished not cloudy overall look? Or do you recommend anything different to go over the epoxy. Or should I just put this to the curb and buy my mom a new table??

To keep dust particles, etc. How big is the table? It sounds like you may need a resin with a longer pot time, which will give you more time after mixing to get it onto your painting. Resin might be a good fit here.

Have you seen this tutorial where I used Judikins fluxe to coat shrink plastic? I would suggest warming the bottles in a warm water bath for 5 minutes or so before using in cold temperatures.

You can also try using a space heater for your area. It could be where the resin started to cure and a bubble finally popped. The resin may not have been liquid enough to fill in the void.

I would suggest mixing smaller batches of resin. It may be that you are trying to use too large a quantity for the amount of pot time the resin has. When you mix them together, they should go clear. If the resin is dark yellow, it may be old. I have been trying my hand in resin jewelry, as it is easier to do at home away from the studio where I do metal work.

For the grouting I would put the mixed resin in a squeezy bottle with a narrow tip then apply the resin around the pieces of glass. If your glue area is hidden, a five minute epoxy is fine. If your glue area is more visible, I would suggest a jewelry quality resin since it will yellow more slowly than the industrial kinds. I use Mod Podge to seal my images, but any clear drying glue should work. Seal the image, then seal it again to the bottom of your bezel. Make sure everything is thoroughly dry 12 hours or more before pouring the resin.

Apply a light amount, buff dry with a soft cloth. It will keep the tarnish away. If the wearer washes the piece with soap and water or ends up using a polishing cloth on it, you will need to reapply the wax. You can also use the wax over cured resin as well. Happy to help. Yes, close the back with painters tape or a good quality masking tape. The Resin Obsession super clear resin would work well for this. The resin will shrink a smidge when it cures and you want to try to have it above the wood a little bit since you want to sand it flat.
