I use quotation marks 'cos some of this record is rather synthy like so much teutonic EBM. And I must admit that I am amenable to liking this sorta thing. I don't know if it's really worth recommending for any reason other than the Flipper connection, but I needed something to provide a smoother transition from Digital Leather to the bizarro Billy Synth. Billy Synth was a man from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, who made this completely whacked EP of leftfield noisepunk back in between his records with his bands, the Janitors and the Turn Ups.

Based Blind - Various - PAHC: Pennsylvania Hardcore (CDr) this perplexing 7", I wanna hear everything ever by Billy Synth. Is this the same guy who made the "Psychedelic Unknowns" series, by the way? Here's more whacked noise from leftfield foul territory warning track by Fat Worm of Error. That's two baseball references, and I actually hate baseball. On this new album, FWOE are bewildering beyond belief, and almost constantly alternating accelerando and ritardando like so much free jazz or a big-hold 45 playing at 33 off-center.

The only question is I am all in on this band, and they've never sounded better. Last week, we heard the Boston Ground Zero; this time, it's the Japanese experimental outfit of the same name led by turntablist Otomo Yoshihide.

Their crowning achievement in my mind was their monolithic "Consume Red," but we didn't hear that because it's an hour long. Ground Zero often revealed a fascination with Chinese culture and society, and on this 7", Yoshihide manipulated the sounds of actual Pekinese opera groups, interjecting revolting shouts and grunts over a bed of annoying smooth jazz which can only represent some kinda insidious government mind control.

This outstanding performance of the Schlippenbach Trio--including Evan Parker--is thee most high-brow thing we've heard on Art for Spastics in quite some time, and that's probably why I can't do much better than say "This is awesome! Finally, here's a different side of Ovo than what you've heard here before.

Thanks for listening! Thursday, April 06, Art for Spastics v. As you may already know, there's gotta be a good reason for me to choose to play anything on "Art for Spastics," so, if I'm gonna play anything even approaching "pop-punk," there better be a damn good Blind - Various - PAHC: Pennsylvania Hardcore (CDr), right?!?! If you think "pop-punk" is a dirty word for what happened to it in the 's, try the band Head from Seattle. Having out-Ramonesed the Ramones on their two inchers and coupla EP's, Head singlehandedly redeemed the term from complete disgrace for me.

I'd figured the band had split up since they've been so silent for the last six years, but some readers at Terminal Boredom said they played at SXSW as part of the Goner Records showcase, and others filled in details about an impending album release and discography CD. The picture above shows proof of their continued existence. I'll sure be happy if these releases actually happen.

We didn't quite have the total commitment, though lousy! Not too soon, guys! And if besides their Sacto roots you can't think of how such a sweet sentimental melody-fest can fit into my "format," well Dude is crazy about the Skaters.

Drums and vox carry forward the FM Knives vibe, which is still comparable to some of the best moments of UK bands such as the Undertones, The Proles, etc.

Four great songs here, plus something new on Thee Raw Deluxe around the corner sometime, or so I hear. Next time singer Patrone--who was also thee power-bassist of the best Los Huevos records--tries to work me for eating at La Fiesta Taqueria--his fave place which I blasted for being "too yuppie"--I'm gonna warn him not to alienate his Davis fanbase.

Musically, the dude has done no wrong since I dunno, Duct Tape? That's an in-joke for him to read We have an old, old 7" from the band's days in Pennsylvania.

I've heard some people say they were from Sacto, and others claim Stockton. I don't know what it says about Sacto that they've gotta fight Stockton to claim a band that almost nobody cares about.

That's not to say more people shouldn't care about Capt. I love the cool, flippant attitude the singer has when bragging about his transgressions, and this song you hear here is a perfect example. I thought they'd broken up years ago, but they played a show in Sacto a couple weeks ago.

I was at another show, but I'm watching for more Capt. No matter which El Farolito location you prefer, this Trashwomen budget-surf classic goes out to all my Bay Arean burrito snobs. I just realized there's one in Oakland, too, but I'll never be able to eat there because the magnetic force of La Otaez is too hard to resist.

Still gotta try their tacos and burritos that have fried chicken in them! Little is known about Home Blitz, but I think they're centered near Philly 'cos the only other blogs to mention them are from around there.

What a neat little record The song gets derailed during the first verse so the singer can unwrap a new piece of gum, thereby earning a nomination for most endearing lack of professionalism since Mystic Records kept the tape rolling through so many thrash bands' false starts. Guaranteed Ugly were a UK garage punk band, and I never heard enough of their records to speak expertly, but this "Soup Kitchen" song is great with its insistent budget keyboard riff Same with the Strip Kings, who made some 7-inches in the mid's, most of which I never heard.

But the B-side of this In the Red single really rips! Memphis' papa bears of blues-damaged swamp-scuzz hand it down to the teen phenoms who took it to new levels of misanthropy. Now both the bands are Blind - Various - PAHC: Pennsylvania Hardcore (CDr) of legend, so this segue's context has sorta changed.

Why, I remember the first and only time I met Jay Reatard. He was all of maybe 15 or 16, a scrawny kid with a moptop and a snarled lip, but also nice and friendly.

I was probably 22 or 23 at the time, but I was so stoked like normal people would be if they met a movie star on the street You're Jay Reatard! I love your stuff, man! You have done so much at your age, it's just incredible Reptilian Civilian is a new young band from Portland, Oregon, who point to the Mummies as their favorite band, and from the sound of their four songs on their Myspace, they're off to a great start running with this inspiration.

It's retarded and trashy low-brow shit with good energy The "breakdown" in the middle of "Activist Judges" is perplexingly searchy before the drummer gets back on track and solidly barrels toward the finish, but it is also ridiculous in a way that I really enjoy. I hope they never change they way they play that part Here's the flip of the Cheveu song you heard a couple weeks ago. This Glands song is the interesting, if a bit trifling, B-side of a forgettable powerpoppy new wave song.

We don't have a picture sleeve, so no other info exists other than what you see above. Care to fill me in on what you know? I've succeeded in determining that this Ground Zero was the one that was active in Boston in I haven't heard the Pittsburgh band to judge them, but Boston's Ground Zero are tough to beat on this record that is hard-edged new-wave artpunk.

TV Toy were band from New Jersey in the late 70's and early 80's. Their three singles I've heard have some great moments with geometrical riffs and the odd bit of sax or keyboards.

I just discovered in my research for annotating this program that they released a full CD discography including these singles and what appears to be an LP's worth of material. Above, you'll find a link to more info about it including instructions on how to purchase it. And, please, I imbed all these links in the hopes that people might help these bands and artists out if you like what you hear.

Anteenagers M. Their "album" from a years back--more precisely, the Anteenagers M. It's the first album to serve as one band's debut album on one side, while the flip is a compilation of bands paying tribute to them with cover versions. This latest Plastic Idol EP is the first stateside release, and it's four more great songs with a little more aggressive hard-charging sound. Frustration is another French band, and I believe they share some members with Anteenagers M.

S-S has released four more Frustration songs on this EP, which includes a song that's a complete reworking of Joy Division's "Interzone," but with the Stoogely guitar riff left largely intact. So far, they've been infallible. Angry Angles is the latest band of Jay Reatard, which is essentially a duo with his gal Alix.

This is not totally unlike Lost Sounds, but this is less frantic, more restrained and cool, and minus the twinge of gothiness. If you haven't subscribed to Not Not Fun's "Bored Fortress" Singles Club, it looks like you're too late to snatch up these great split 7-inches of ace bands--ranging from folky indie pop to forbidding noise--in lovely packaging as you've come to expect from this superb DIY label.

The echoey guitar riff and moan-wave vocal sounds Blind - Various - PAHC: Pennsylvania Hardcore (CDr) a wartime siren and big brother warning recorded underwater, and the rhythm is like a giant army of big dumb droid marching off to battle. Here's another KK Rampage song. I'm curious to know what any reader's accounts of them might be, especially if you've seen them in live performance. I've heard of some rather crazy stunts being pulled by these boys, but I've only ever read first-hand accounts of people who were very unamused with their antics.

Are these people just a buncha whiners? In any event, I'm very curious to see them come out west sometime. Skarekrau Radio is from southern Illinois, somewhere across the river from St.

The best band ever from St. Louis was the extreme braincell-devastatin' Drunks With Guns. I hear echoes of those delightful moronics--minus the metal riffs--in SKR, but it's also crossed with the same kinda lunacy as Caroliner Rainbow, which has given rise to a band mythology of sorts. The band even has their own religion centered on worshipping this babygod Kuu, and you can easily spend two hours at the SKR website linked above reading about it.

They recorded an album many years ago called "Paramecium Fudge vol 1," and the last few hundred or so were repackaged and sorta re-released by Scenery Audio Archive. I got myself a few copies of it to give away to friends because it was such a fun record. Very unpredictable stuff! This split LP is the newest thing they've done, and now they are more predictable, but perhaps better for it. This is primo scuzzrock which fans of the Bunny Brains would really enjoy.

Dampading was a fleeting noisy DIY rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, perhaps America's only very large city with almost no musical legacy. I mean, even San Jose had all those powerviolence bands in the 90's! Dampading is the only band I ever heard from Jacksonville, but they were a good one.

This B-side sprawls out with psychedelic guitar splatter and excessively reverbed vocals, and then recoils into a tight catchy riff that really packs punch. Unfortunately, I learned that earlier this year, a member of the band died, and the story is linked under the band's name above. The Feces Munchers were Davis, California's entrant into the powerviolence sweepstakes.

Before that, they were a Palo Alto-based ultra-lofi noise-core duo think Meatshits or early Anal Cunt who recorded a some-odd-song demo cassette in a Stanford University dormitory. It had all kindsa different meanings in any and every part of speech. They had their own language! The Davis version of Feces Munchers only existed for about a year or two, right at the end of the powerviolence era.

They had the lead bass, dual vocals, and tricky drum fills and breakdowns like other powerviolence bands, but every song was a big in-joke based on true events of "cornheading my sesh" and getting "ruthlessly whippy-chipped" by people being "hella-unmellow. This record is so late that the song "Jerkbashing in the " had to be renamed for the area code change to Even I forgot that nine years ago, Davis was in the On this song, Ovo matches ferocity with even the fiercest powerviolence band, but on this new album on Load Records, this Italian duo reveals some serious versatility.

There's short, sharp shocks brutality like this half-minute number, menacing midpaced noiserock, and even long, dramatic pieces that remind me of Neubauten at their broodiest e. I was just thinking about how good they were live at Grandma's House a bit over a year ago. I thought it was pretty great how the woman in the band started bowing one of her dreadlocks, and yanking on it to actually make a talking-drum sorta sound. I'd be remiss if I didn't tell everyone that the best record of the most recent awesome new releases from Load Records is "To Be Treated" by Impractical Cockpit.

Damn, that is probably my favorite new thing of so far The command is what really impressed me. Several times during the show he would be playing something incredibly fast and complex and then out of nowhere drop into a completely different mood and texture without warning.

It was very effective in a musical sense and tremendously impressive technically. One potentially controversial opinion, I'm still not sure I'm that impressed with the Loar.

Sure it sounded great but part of me still prefers the tone he got out of the Dude that he played for so many years. This being a tiny hall, he played completely acoustic, no amplification at all and I was sitting very close to the stage so I really got to hear it as well as I'll ever be able to and while he sounded great, I didn't get the impression that the instrument is all that special.

Some musical standouts that I can remember include the transition from both the Corrente and the Sarabanda into songs of his - all were in D minor, which helps but I found those to be very effective, particularly from the Sarabande into Another New Blind - Various - PAHC: Pennsylvania Hardcore (CDr). Anybody who has seen Punch Brothers in recent years will know how much of a crowd favorite that one is, and it's somehow no less effective solo.

The really striking part about it, to me, was that he started the first line of Another New World "Leading lights of the age I'll have to hear the new piece a few more times before I can say much about it. I can compare it to The Blind Leaving the Blind in structure, but not content, in that the three movements go through what seem to be a few different song ideas each weaving in and out of instrumental sections that bind the piece together.

One final part that was really fun for me is that somewhere early in the show I think during True Love WaitsChris' pick broke in half right in the middle of the song. Naturally, he finished with his fingers as if nothing had happened but the front third of the pick I think the point that was actually hitting the strings flew onto the front of the stage and was left there for the rest of the show and when he left the stage for the last time, I walked up and grabbed it.

I know there was some discussion a while back about what kind of pick he's using these days so from examining it on my desk in front of me, I can tell you it's definitely some kind of faux tortoise. There's nothing on it to identify it more precisely than that. It apparently had holes drilled in it because I can see part of one where it broke off.

It has what I would consider a pretty standard bevel and is comparable in thickness to my Bluechip CT 55 which would put it at 1. This part is doubly funny to me because the last time I was in Weill Hall, I was there to see Avi Avital, who also dropped a pick on stage that I retrieved after he was done with it.

I should go there more often. All in all, it was a fantastic evening and while I'd say don't miss him if you get the chance, I'm not sure if there will be another chance to see him like this in a solo acoustic setting. I'm just glad I was able to be there for it when it happened. Nov, pm 2.

Popper and Raphael turn the song into a sizzling blues harp blowout. The co-headlining tour with JJ Grey and Mofro seems like a natural, and there could be some jamming between the two bands.

And Blues Traveler is eager to get back to the summer tents too. And are those tent stages in Massachusetts still rotating? The UK's counterpart to Todd Edwards was MJ Colea classically trained oboe and piano player, who had a string of chart and underground hits in the late s and early s, most notably with " Sincere " and " Crazy Love ". This was to allow for these tracks to be aimed at a more commercial scene rather than for the dance floor. The Architechs sped up the vocals through time-stretching and added sound effects to increase the competitive nature.

What results is a posthuman mix between person and technology. After the platinum-selling success of "Sweet Like Chocolate", the floodgates had opened. Although "Re-Rewind" was denied a 1 position by Cliff Richard and his song " The Millennium Prayer ", it was also a platinum seller, one of the garage scene's first and last.

Although not UK garage, Mr. Many more UK garage acts followed into the new millennium by releasing commercially successful singles, thus making UK garage and 2-step a stable fixture on the UK charts for the next couple of years.

Debut singles of various UK garage artists were hitting the number one spot on the UK charts. Another huge hit in was the Timo Maas remix of the song " Dooms Night " 8 by German producer Azzido Da Basswhich was heavily associated with UK garage at the time, having become a major club hit and appearing on several UK garage compilations.

During this period, traditional UK garage was pushed back underground amongst the bad publicity emanating from the tougher side of the genre, and publicised violence surrounding members of the So Solid Crew. During this time, there was also a strong division of class Funky Jam UK garage. In the heyday of garage, the late s, it was a highly aspirational genre.

When people went to the club to hear garage, they dressed stylish and smart. Clubs like Twice as Nice enforced a dress code. Having a formal dress code took the importance placed on nice clothes from a style to exclusionary. The dress code in clubs like Twice as Nice were meant to "encourage people to make an effort" and "keep trouble out.

Jim Payne states that funk drumming uses a "wide-open" approach to improvisation around rhythmic ideas from Latin music, ostinatosthat are repeated "with only slight variations", an approach which he says causes the "mesmerizing" nature of funk. In funk, guitarists often mix playing chords of a short duration nicknamed "stabs" with faster rhythms and riffs. The two guitarists trade off their lines to create a " call-and-responseintertwined pocket. The technique can be broken down into three approaches: the "chika", the "chank" and the "choke".

With the "chika" comes a muted sound of strings being hit against the fingerboard; "chank" is a staccato attack done by releasing the chord with the fretting hand after strumming it; and "choking" generally uses all the strings being strummed and heavily muted. The result of these factors was a rhythm guitar sound that seemed to float somewhere between the low-end thump of the electric bass and the cutting tone of the snare and hi-hatswith a rhythmically melodic feel that fell deep in the pocket.

Guitarist Jimmy Nolenlongtime guitarist for James Brown, developed this technique. The pattern of attack-points is the emphasis, not the pattern of pitches. The guitar is used the way that an African drum, or idiophone would be used. Nolen created a "clean, trebly tone" by using "hollow-body jazz guitars with single-coil P pickups" plugged into a Fender Twin Reverb amp with the mid turned down low and the treble turned up high. Funk guitarists playing rhythm guitar generally avoid distortion effects and amp overdrive to get a clean sound, and given the importance of a crisp, high sound, Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters were widely used for their cutting treble tone.

Guitarist Eddie Hazel from Funkadelic is notable for his solo improvisation particularly for the solo on " Maggot Brain " and guitar riffs, the tone of which was shaped by a Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone pedal. Ernie Funky Jam was tutored at an early age by Hendrix, when Hendrix was a part of the Isley Brothers backing band and temporarily lived in the Isleys' household. Funk guitarists use the wah-wah sound effect along with muting the notes to create a percussive sound for their guitar riffs.

A range of keyboard instruments are used in funk. Synthesizers were used in funk both to add to the deep sound of the electric bass, or even to replace the electric bass altogether in some songs. In the s, funk used many of the same vocal styles that were used in African-American music in the s, including singing influences from blues, gospel, jazz and doo-wop. As funk emerged from soul, the vocals in funk share soul's approach; however, funk vocals tend to be "more punctuated, energetic, rhythmically percussive[,] and less embellished" with ornaments, and the vocal lines tend to resemble horn parts and have "pushed" rhythms.

The lyrics in funk music addressed issues faced by the African American community in the United States during the s, which arose due to the move away from an industrial, working-class economy to an information economy, which harmed the Black working class. The Funkadelic song " One Nation Under A Groove " is about the challenges that Blacks overcame during the s civil rights movement, and it includes an exhortation for Blacks in the s to capitalize on the new "social and political opportunities" that had become available in the s.

The political themes of funk songs and the aiming of the messages to a Black audience echoed the new image of Blacks that was created in Blaxploitation films, which depicted "African-American men and women standing their ground and fighting for what was right". Funk songs included metaphorical language Funky Jam was understood best by listeners who were "familiar with the black aesthetic and [black] vernacular".

In the s, to get around radio obscenity restrictions, funk artists would use words that sounded like non-allowed words and double entendres to get around these restrictions.

Horn section arrangements with groups of brass instruments are often used in funk songs. Funk horn sections performed in a "rhythmic percussive style" that mimicked the approach used by funk rhythm guitarists. The instruments in funk horn sections varied. If there were two brass instruments, it could be trumpet and tenor sax, trumpet and trombone, or two saxes. Quintets would typically take a pair of brass instruments saxes or trumpetsand add different high and low brass instruments.

With six instruments, a brass section would typically be two pairs of brass instruments plus a trombone and baritone sax holding down the bottom end. In bands or shows where hiring a horn section is not feasible, a keyboardist can play the horn section parts on a synthesizer with "keyboard brass patches", however, choosing an authentic-sounding synthesizer and brass patch is important.

Funk bands in the s adopted Afro-American fashion and style, including " Bell-bottom pantsplatform shoes, hoop earring[s], Afros [hairstyles], leather vests, Funk allowed everyday experiences to be expressed to challenge daily struggles and hardships fought by lower and working class communities. Gerhard Kubik notes that with the exception of New Orleansearly blues lacked complex polyrhythmsand there was a "very specific absence of asymmetric time-line patterns key patterns in virtually all early twentieth century African-American music These do not function in the same way as African time lines.

In the late s this changed somewhat when the two-celled time line structure was brought into New Orleans blues. Robert Palmer reports that, in the s, Professor Longhair listened to and played with musicians from the islands and "fell under the spell of Perez Prado 's mambo records. Longhair's rhythmic approach became a basic template of funk. According to Dr. Longhair's thing had a direct bearing I'd say on a large portion of the funk music that evolved in New Orleans.

Alexander Stewart states: "Eventually, musicians from outside of New Orleans began to learn some of the rhythmic practices [of the Crescent City]. Most important of these were James Brown and the drummers and arrangers he employed. In a related development, the underlying rhythms of American popular music underwent a basic, yet generally unacknowledged transition from triplet or shuffle feel to even or straight eighth notes.

By the mids, James Brown had developed his signature groove that emphasized the downbeat —with heavy emphasis on the first beat of every measure to etch his distinctive sound, rather than the backbeat that typified African-American music. Brown's style of funk was based on interlocking, contrapuntal parts: syncopated basslines16th beat drum patterns, and syncopated guitar riffs. On "Ain't it Funky" the tonal structure is barebones.

Brown's innovations led to him and his band becoming the seminal funk act; they also pushed the funk music style further to the forefront with releases such as " Cold Sweat "" Mother Popcorn " and " Get Up I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine "discarding even the twelve-bar blues featured in his earlier music. Instead, Brown's music was overlaid with "catchy, anthemic vocals" based on "extensive vamps" in which he also used his voice as "a percussive instrument with frequent rhythmic grunts and with rhythm-section patterns Ellis credits Clyde Stubblefield 's adoption of New Orleans drumming techniques, as the basis of modern funk: "If, in a studio, you said 'play it funky' that could imply almost anything.

But 'give me a New Orleans beat' — you got exactly what you wanted. And Clyde Stubblefield was just the epitome of this funky drumming. In a interview, Brown offered his reason for switching the rhythm of his music: "I changed from the upbeat to the downbeat Simple as that, really.

Reflecting back to his early days with Brown's band, Parker reported that he had difficulty playing "on the one" during solo performances, since he was used to hearing and playing with the accent on the second beat. A new group of musicians began to further develop the "funk rock" approach.

Innovations were prominently made by George Clintonwith his bands Funky Jam and Funkadelic. Together, they produced a new kind of funk sound heavily influenced by jazz and psychedelic rock.

The two groups shared members and are often referred to collectively as "Parliament-Funkadelic. Clinton played a principal role in several other bands, including Parletthe Horny Horns, and the Brides of Funkenstein, all part of the P-Funk conglomerate.

Following the work of Jimi Hendrix in the late s, artists such as Sly and the Family Stone combined the psychedelic rock of Hendrix with funk, borrowing wah pedalsfuzz boxesecho chambersand vocal distorters from the former, as well as blues rock and jazz. Other musical groups picked up on the rhythms and vocal style developed by James Brown and his band, and the funk style began to grow.

Dyke and the Blazersbased in Phoenix, Arizonareleased " Funky Broadway " inperhaps the first record of the soul music era to have the word "funky" in the title.

In Jimmy McGriff released Electric Funkfeaturing his distinctive organ over a blazing horn section. Their debut album East Bay Greasereleasedis considered an important milestone in funk. Throughout the s, TOP had many hits, and the band helped to make funk music a successful genre, with a broader audience.

Notably, these afforded the group and the genre crossover success and greater recognition, yet such success escaped comparatively talented and moderately popular funk band peers.

The Temptationswho had previously helped to define the " Motown Sound" — a distinct blend of pop-soul — adopted this new psychedelic sound towards the end of the s as well.

The s were the era of highest mainstream visibility for funk music. Disco music owed a great deal to funk. Many early disco songs and performers Funky Jam directly from funk-oriented backgrounds. InRose Royce scored a number-one hit with a purely dance-funk record, " Car Wash ". It also appears as the second track on his This Is It compilation album.

The single was re-released in as part of Jackson's Visionary: The Video Singles collection campaign, and it was remixed to the Cirque du Soleil 's Immortal World Tour, releasing that remix on the soundtrack album.

The single peaked at 26 on the Billboard Hot The song re-entered the UK Singles Chart inreaching number Chris Lacy from Albumism said that on the song, Jackson "explains that jamming the joy of music and dance is his preferred method of temporarily escaping worldly issues. Jackson's signature squeals and whoops are at home within an urgent groove that seems to goad him to the point of catharsis.

Though it initially sounds like a simple, funky dance vehicle, Jackson's voice bites into each phrase with a desperation that urges us to look deeper. He is singing as "false prophets cry of doom" and exhorts us to "live each day like it's the last. To Jackson, who insists that he comes truly alive only onstage, the ability to "Jam" is the sole means to find "peace within myself," and this hope rings more sincere than the childlike wishes found in the ballads.

The music video for "Jam" takes place within an abandoned indoor basketball court, where Michael Jackson teaches basketball legend Michael Jordan how to dance, and in return, Jordan teaches Jackson how to play basketball.

Special effects have Jackson throwing a basketball through a window and scoring in the hoop in the opposite room, as well as Jackson scoring by tossing the ball behind him and kicking the ball into the hoop with his heel.

The extended versions of the video include Jackson teaching Jordan how to do the physically complicated moonwalk dance technique. The rap groups Kris Kross and Naughty by Nature made a cameo appearance, as does Heavy D who performs a rap during the bridge.

The music video was directed by David Kellogg and was filmed on April 20, in ChicagoIllinois. Jackson performed "Jam" as the opening number throughout his Dangerous World Tour.

Some of the Smile material continued to trickle out in subsequent Beach Boys releases, often as filler songs to offset Wilson's unwillingness to contribute. Neither of the tracks were recordings from the Smile sessions; they were each recorded for their respective albums. Brian was not consulted on this stipulation. For the band's second Reprise album, tentatively titled LandlockedWilson agreed to the inclusion of "Surf's Up". Brian joined them on at least two occasions. Brian initially refused to participate in these sessions, but after a few days, he added a part to the song's "Child Is Father of the Man" coda.

On February 28,Carl announced the imminent release of Smile at a London press conference. Asked if he had been working on the album, he replied that he had, during the previous June, and that the group had created safety copies of all the tapes. Asked about the forthcoming release at a later date, Carl responded: "We've all had intentions of finishing the album, but something persists that keeps that from happening, and I don't know what that is.

InBrian told a Melody Maker reporter that there was not enough material to compile a Smile album and that it would never be released. In his biography of the band, David Leaf wrote that Smile "can never be completed as Brian intended, so a compromise solution might be to release the surviving tapes and outtakes in a series of records called The Smile Sessions [like] Elvis ' Sun Sessions Johnston said: "I wanted to make up a collage [of the Smile recordings], but I want Brian to be the one to put the collage together.

I can tell he still feels funny about that stuff. You know, there a lot of Smile stuff intact …" []. InWilson discussed an intention to complete Smile and assemble the tracks in three movements. He said, "It's better to do it that way, because musically now, as opposed to '66 or '78, it would be more interesting to just give you a peek at it than to do the whole thing.

There's been too much press on it. It's like talking about bringing out the '67 Rolls Royce and they finally show it in ' You go, 'Oh, no. InWaronker encouraged Wilson to compose a Smile -esque song for his debut solo album, Brian Wilson This resulted in the " Rio Grande " suite, written with co-producer Andy Paley. During the late s, Mark Linett prepared mixes of some Smile tracks in anticipation for a then-forthcoming release.

He added that he considered asking his bandmates to overdub the remaining vocal tracks. InWilson reteamed with Parks for the collaborative album Orange Crate Artwhich provoked speculation regarding a future release of Smile.

He could load up an interactive CD with seven hours of stuff from those sessions and just tell the people who buy it, 'You finish it. Carl rejected the idea, as he feared that it would cause Brian another nervous breakdown. Asked about Smile during the press run for his comeback album ImaginationWilson responded, "I thought too much. Smile was just a bunch of weird stuff that didn't even amount to anything. It's just not appropriate music. I know it's a legendary thing. The Smile trip is a legend.

I seriously doubt that any of you reading this don't have a homemade cassette recorder. Many of the original Smile recordings were only publicly available on bootlegs until The compilers were only informed by the song titles from the December track list and were not always aware that the recordings on those albums were not the original Smile versions. Most of the fan correspondence was through newsletters, which helped disseminate information and attract people who were interested in compiling details concerning the band's music.

To assist with the writing of his authorized biography of the band, Byron Preiss was given a tape of Smile recordings, the contents of which were distributed to a small group of people over the next few years. Ina "Second Edition" of the Brother Records LP surfaced without the labelled addresses and with a significantly different presentation order. The set also included different mixes that suggested a spread of newly available Smile recordings.

Following this, in the words of music historian Andrew Doe, "Bootlegs of Smile came out left, right and centre. Since the mids, CDs had supplanted vinyl as the predominate medium for bootlegs, and dozens of different Smile CD releases were traded and sold commercially by mail order, independent record stores, and head shops. Two types of Smile bootlegs appeared in the s: those in which the compilers attempted to assemble the album in a completed form, and others that simply presented the project as session recordings.

They both released Smile sets that combined the two types of bootlegs and helped bring interest to the recordings among people outside of the Beach Boys fan community. By the end of the s, Smile had become one of the most well-documented projects in the bootlegging community. In the late s, Domenic Priore collaborated with musicians Darian Sahanaja and Nick Walusko on a punk -style fanzine called The Dumb Angel Gazettethe most comprehensive attempt to document information regarding the album.

According to Priore, although some "questioned the sanity behind the publication of such a huge book on an album that had never been released", the book ultimately "received accolades from Spin and Rolling Stone ", as well as "positive personal reactions" from musicians such as XTCApples in Stereoand former Beatle George Harrison.

Wilson was able to complete a version of Smile in with the assistance of the Smile fan network that had developed since the s. A studio album adaptation was recorded six weeks later and released in September.

The album has been one of the most discussed and dissected unreleased records ever made Multiple theories abound concerning what Smile might actually have been if it had been completed, and many mysteries are contained even within Brian's semi-official tracklist, not to mention the scores of unfinished takes, brief instrumentals, and experiments that were attempted during the sessions.

In the decades following Smile ' s non-release, it became the subject of intense speculation and mystique [] [] and gained status as the most legendary unreleased album in the history of popular music.

A published conversation between David Anderle and Paul Williams, serialized in Crawdaddy inwas another early resource for information regarding the album. Anderle acknowledged of his role in inflating the mythology, "I guess we all do that. We all extend the story, don't we? We all extend the moment. It's satisfying.

But what a burden for Brian I wasn't aware of him as a myth. I just wrote down what I saw and heard. The mystique around the project grew during the s, particularly among music critics.

InDave Marsh bemoaned the hype, calling it "an exercise in myth-mongering almost unparalleled in show business. Brian Wilson became a Major Artist by making music no one outside of his coterie ever heard.

Bootlegs of the sessions became influential in their own right [] and intensified the public's interest in the album. While functioning mostly as a rumor, when some bootlegged tracks confirmed its existence, Smile became a catalyst for records that followed in its wake.

Many of the album's advocates believe that had it been released, it would have altered the group's direction and solidified their position at the vanguard of rock innovators. Instead, for the most part it remains unheard today, and that's quite possibly the saddest fact in all of music.

Spencer Owen of Pitchfork argued that the album could have dramatically altered the course of popular music history, such that "Perhaps we wouldn't be so monotheistic in our pop leanings, worshiping only at the Beatles' altar the way some do today. Pepper was. It is likely that the vast majority of the content recorded for Smile would have been left off the record due to the runtime constraints of vinyl discs. According to Linett, although contemporaries such as Frank Zappa and Bob Dylan had experimented with double albumsthere is "no indication" that a multi-disc format for Smile "was ever contemplated" in or Would it really have gone over much bigger than Van Dyke's disastrous Song Cycle a year later?

Would it be inviting such brouhaha today? Asked in a interview whether Smile would have topped his rivals' subsequent release, Wilson replied: "No. It wouldn't have come close. Pepper would have kicked our ass. PepperClinton Heylin criticized Parks' lyrics as "little more than columns of non sequiturs from a man who once swallowed a thesaurus" and decreed that much of the surviving Smile recordings "confirm that Wilson was nowhere near completing an album to rival Revolver let alone its psychedelic successor.

Pepper"And it's a damn shame, too". Reviewing the available bootlegs and officially released tracks for AllMusicRichie Unterberger said that "numerous exquisitely beautiful passages, great ensemble singing, and brilliant orchestral pop instrumentation" were in circulation, yet "the fact is that Wilson somehow lacked the discipline needed to combine them into a pop masterpiece that was both brilliant and commercial.

But it wouldn't have been commercial, in the way that the Doorsor Loveor Jefferson Airplane were. With SmileWilson anticipated editing practices that were not common until the digital age. Sanchez offered his view of the project as a "radical" expansion of "the glow and sui generis vision" of Pet Soundsone which "presents itself with a kind of directness that is unlike anything else in popular music".

InFreaky Trigger wrote that Smile was not "the best album ever", but that it is "astoundingly original" and "tangible evidence of an alternative rock history which turned out differently". Wilson's experiments in and seem normative of the kinds of things most interesting musicians in any genre were up to at that point and even tamer than some of them. The blurring of boundaries between musical genres was pretty much commonplace at that time, as was the attitude, however real or imagined, that just about any musical undertaking was somehow an expansion beyond anything that had come before it.

What has gone down in history as the breakthrough, however, is The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Despite how remarkable Sgt. Pepper's was and still sounds 44 years later, had SMiLE actually been released, that honor probably would have, could have, and should have been accorded to it instead.

Oteri concluded that "the same pride of place in American music history held by other great innovators" such as Charles IvesGeorge Gershwin, John CageJohn Coltraneand James Brown would "probably" never include Smilesince, "For many people, the Beach Boys will always be perceived as a light-hearted party band that drooled over ' California Girls ' while on a ' Surfing Safari '.

Smile was influential to indie rock [] and its mythology became a touchstone for chamber pop and the more art-inclined branches of post-punk. The potential of what Smile would have been was the primary thing that inspired us Elephant 6. When we started hearing Smile bootlegs, it was mind-blowing. It was what we had hoped it would be, but a lot of those songs weren't finished, so there was still this mystery of not hearing the melodies and lyrics.

We wondered, "What are these songs and how do they fit together? Is this a verse? Bungle album California"especially when it comes to the Faustian scale of it. There remains no definitive form or content of Smileand whether Smile should be considered an "album" has itself been challenged. Furthermore, any effort to guess at what the album might have sounded like would be nothing more than conjecture. He described Smile as a "labyrinth" that exists "in a memory house into which Wilson invited all those who could externalize its elements".

As a collection of modular melodic ideas it is by nature organic and resists being bookended. Academic Larry Starr opined that "the idea there could be a 'definitive' Smile decades after Brian Wilson abandoned the project was always chimerical". From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. One of the distinguishing features of Smile was the use of abrupt jumpcuts. But we enjoyed those challenges. A later composite version of " Surf's Up " was completed by the Beach Boys for the album of the same name.

Since portions of the instrumental track were missing a lead vocal, one was overdubbed by Carl. A simple rhythmic and melodic theme referred to as "Bicycle Rider" served as a recurring motif on Smile.

It was later reworked into the chorus of "Heroes and Villains". Main article: Brian Wilson Presents Smile. Main article: The Smile Sessions. These recordings remain unreleased. It wasn't pop music; it was something more advanced.

But I told Brian that I wouldn't touch it with a foot pole and that nobody'd be listening to the lyrics anyway once they heard that music. But when the finished product is 'Good Vibrations' or Pet Sounds or Smile they hold back their complaints. The reporter nevertheless added that "The sensational success of the Beach Boys We're all four fans of the Beach Boys. Maybe we voted for them. She also starred in Black Widowwhich wasn't a hit, and acted alongside Hutton as a male angel in Made in Heaven which flopped. She followed that up by starring in another flop, Betrayedwhich featured a fleeting cameo by Hutton.

She separated from Hutton in and they divorced inat which time she had two more bombs, Everybody Wins and The Sheltering Sky However, she relished the experience on The Sheltering Sky so much that she stayed in the Sahara desert long after filming wrapped.

But, she found love on the set of her next film, Wilder Napalm when she co-starred opposite Arliss Howard, who became her next husband. The film flopped but their marriage lasted. She received good notices for A Dangerous Womanbut it was Shadowlands which finally brought her renewed respectability and her third Academy Award nomination as Best Actress.

She followed that up with a forgettable comedy, Forget Paris Then, she signed to do "Divine Rapture" with Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp in a small village in Ireland, but two weeks into filming, financing fell apart, and the film was never completed.

I did sneak back a couple of times to put pics in the middle of my photostream, and whenever I can I stop by my friends' photos to check up on them, but I like totally stopped posting new pics, 'cause, like, seriously, I've been toooooo busy with stuff to take new pics!

It's a shame, as I have like an awesome apartment, and it is just so made for photo-shoots but I don't get the time to take any sob!! Poor lil' me!!! Like, yeah, right! So, like yeah, I took a load last weekend. Still in a schoolgirl outfit, 'cause I kinda like the schoolie look. A kinda baggy sweater, a shortish skirt, and white over the knee socks are hardly the things of erotica, but I like how they look. I kinda think this picture is all about the sorta naughty but nice thanx Linda for that expression!

The idea of entertaining a hunky male after school and having a heavy petting session gets me all squirmy inside!

I've got nothing to bounce them off of, so just a gentle caress of my ass or a tongue darting in my mouth during a kiss is deeply sensual to me.

Anyway, like, I'm not back of Flickr long term or anything. This is just a stop by to say hi! I'm gonna try and stop by some of my friends' pics tonight, but it's already way late where I'm at amost midnight and I'm all tired and a lil' bit drunk, so I don't know how I'll manage!!!

Seu trabalho reflecte a cultura nova-iorquina dos anos Antes de acabar o curso, transfere-se para Nova Iorque, onde seria grandemente influenciado pelos graffitis, inscrevendo-se na School of Visual Arts. As curator of the Keith Haring retrospective mounted by New York's Whitney Museum of American Art inElisabeth Sussman composed a thoughtful catalogue text in which she tidily divided the artist's career into three "chapters.

In the middle phase, lasting from approximately towhen he developed the first symptoms of AIDS, Haring produced paintings that were essentially Pop versions of Neo-Expressionism. In these years he also used his cartoon-like graphic line to execute murals, many of them for and even together with children. There can be no doubt that the artist's battle with AIDS had a profound effect on his artistic vision.

Sussmann's categories are nonetheless too neat and too emphatic, concealing both the humor that frequently enlivens the late works and the dark side that shadows even the earliest, cartoon-like compositions.

And the artist was a social activist from the beginning of his career. At a demonstration in Central Park inhe distributed 20, antinuclear posters.

His "Anti-Litterpig" campaign was launched inthe famous Crack is Wack mural painted in The true "horror of AIDS had come to light"3 for Haring inand he had for some time regarded himself as a prime AIDS "candidate" - even before discovering the first Karposi sarcoma on his leg during a trip to Japan in Not only numerous intimate acquaintances, including his ex-lover Juan Dubose, had already succumbed to the disease. Rumors of Haring's own infection were rife long before he himself learned that he was HIV-positive.

More than a year before the diagnosis, Newsweek had tracked the artist down in Europe to ask if his protracted stay there was a cover-up for his affliction with AIDS.

Yet for all the LP implications of the onset of the disease itself, it is a mistake to overemphasize the event as a kind of watershed, as a Album) in which the oeuvre itself underwent some seismic change. Such an oversimplification is tempting but ultimately misleading. And it is not unlike that simplistic approach to the work of Andy Warhol which suggests a fundamental shift New Direction - Secret Army - Crush The Remains (Vinyl theme and point of view following the assassination attempt by Valerie Solanis.

In fact, Warhol's own fascination with "Death and Disaster" was well established before the deranged feminist entered the Factory in with revolver blazing. And it was soon followed by garishly tinted studies of suicides, car crashes, race riots and electric chairs. Keith Haring, too, had explored a darker side of experience long before the dread diagnosis.

The earliest works produced in his characteristic graphic style include serpents and monsters, nuclear radiation and falling angels, cannibals, omnivorous worms, bloody daggers and skeletons. The devil himself makes occasional appearances, as does the multi-headed beast of the Apocalypse.

One can make out a sinister form that may well represent a virus, and an androgynous figure which wheels a sword-like crucifix over the heads of children, while scissors and chains are employed in sadomasochistic practices which often end in castration. In a Saint Sebastian, produced in and one of the few titled works by Haring, the martyr's body is pierced not by arrows but by airplanes - one of the numerous examples of the artist's critical view of technology, but also testimony to his deeply felt pacifism.

The figure of a hanged man, perhaps influenced by William Burroughs' Naked Lunch, makes it debut in So, too, do human figures writhing in the clutch of a nest of serpents. In a serpent pierces and thereby joins like so many beads on a string a row of human figures with holes in their abdomens.

Indeed, human figures with holes gouged in their middles are a recurrent pictogram - one inspired, according to the artist himself, by the assassination of John Lennon in December of Yet even before that event, Haring was sounding the themes of violence and death in the cut-up headlines he posted around New York City, inspired both by his friend Jenny Holzer and by William Burroughs.

When Keith Haring undertook his first cross-country trip in with his girlfriend Susan, he financed the journey by silkscreening T-shirts and selling them along the way. One model showed Richard Nixon sniffing a kilo of marijuana; the other featured the logo of the Grateful Dead: a skull - the penultimate memento mori that also fascinated Warhol - split by a lightning bolt.

One of Haring's early subway drawings includes a skeleton wearing wire-rimmed glasses as an encoded self-portrait. In a diary entry for March 18,the artist reflected on the significance of "Being born in, the first generation of the Space Age, born into a world of television technology and instant gratification, a child of the atomic age. Raised in American during the sixties and learning about war from Life magazines on Viet Nam.

Watching riots on television He was equally aware of the dangers inherent in "peacetime" uses of nuclear energy.

The notorious near-meltdown at Three Mile Island in occurred a short distance from the Haring home in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Spaceships projecting rays onto earthlings often hover over his works, and his famous "radiant" baby may suggest radioactive contamination as well as spiritual glow.

In short, the first "chapter" in Haring's career was neither so innocent nor so giddily affirmative as it is sometimes made out to be. His media-savvy generation, exposed at an early age to "sex, drugs and rock-'n'-roll," was quickly disabused of childhood's illusions.

At the age of 19, he confided to his diary, "Through all the shit shines the small ray of hope that lives in the common sense of the few. The music, dance, theater, and the visual arts: the forms of expression, the arts of hope. This is where I think I fit in. What one witnesses is literally The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, to cite the title of a Roland Petit choreography for the Ballet National de Marseilles, for which Haring created a huge front curtain in Whether Haring was familiar with William Blake's ironic poem of the same title is uncertain, though the English poet was a favorite of the psychedelic set to which Haring belonged for a time.

Furthermore, there are occasional parallels between Haring's graphic style and the illustrations Blake prepared for his own works. The implications of a linked pair of Blake titles - Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience - have clear relevance for Haring's oeuvre, as well. The key to Haring's work is not to be found in "chapters" or in oppositions, but precisely in the mingling, the marriage of innocence and experience, good and evil, heaven and hell.

This inherent but essential ambiguity is reinforced by an image he created in June ofless than a year before his death. He was in Paris at the time, executing a monumental painting intended to decorate a dirigible to be flown over the city in commemoration of the th anniversary of the French Revolution.

The starting point was a photograph of the artist sitting on a chair from the Vitra Collection, part of a series of celebrity portraits made for the German furniture company. With a felt pen, Haring fitted himself out with wings, floated a halo over his head, bound his feet with shackles and coiled a rope-like or snakelike form around his torso.

In fact, in other works the rope which binds a victim often turns into a snake in the hands of his tormentor. Haring remarked on his own creation: "Whoever understands this photograph understands what my work is all about. In his journal Haring described the events of June 16th as follows: Friday I had a "press lunch" with the airship people boring and trivial.

Then went to Futura's exhibit and bought a nice new painting. Met David Galloway there. He came to Paris to interview me for the book Hans Mayer is doing on my sculptures. Went with David to see the airship painting again and do photos. We talked a lot and by the same time we got to the hotel the conversation got deeper and continually off the "subject. Did some photos for a German spaghetti book. Portrait of me with a drawing made out of spaghetti we ordered from room service.

Nice quiet dinner and then returned to hotel with David to talk till 1 The "deeper" talk that quickly veered from the topic of sculpture and continued into the early hours of the morning ultimately found its focus in the fat roll of galley proofs resting on the mantelpiece of Haring's suite at the Ritz Hotel.

This was the interview by David Scheff that would appear in Rolling Stone on August 10th, and in which Haring talked with painful frankness about his own illness. Later in the year, he would march in protest against New York City's "racist" policy with respect to the disease, which allegedly only afflicted perverts, junkies and Afro-Americans. Nonetheless, when the time came to approve Sheff's uncompromising interview, the activist experienced a moment of hesitation.

Quite simply, he feared he might not be permitted to work with children again, and this was one of his most cherished activities. Despite such misgivings, on June 17 he sent his approval of the text to the editors of Rolling Stone, and when it appeared the artist experienced an immense, deeply gratifying wave of sympathy.

The sole sour note was a protest against his having been commissioned by Princess Caroline to execute a mural for the maternity ward of the Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco - allegedly a potential danger for future generations. In transforming a photographic portrait into a self-portrait with a few brisk strokes, Haring made an emphatic statement about his artistic intentions.

At the same time, he revealed the depth of his own religious sentiment. Though not a practicing Christian in the last years of his life, the artist had a profound sense of right and wrong, of good and evil, and he devoted a considerable part of his energy to social causes. Attending Sunday School and church had been a regular part of the Harings' family life, and in summer Keith attended the camp run by the United Church of Christ. As a teenager he joined the Jesus Saves movement, read the Bible voraciously and developed "an obsession with the concept of the Second Coming Even at the age of 12, according to Haring's mother, "he began making drawings in which there were Jesus symbols and other types of symbols, like a loop with two dots.

Indeed, the artist once complained to his journal that "Most religions are so hopelessly outdated, and suited to fit the particular problems of earlier times, that they have no power to provide liberation and freedom, and no power to give 'meaning' beyond an empty metaphor or moral code.

When he finally decided, while dancing at New York's Paradise Garage, to depict the Ten Commandments within the arches of Bordeaux's Musee d'Art Contemporain for his show there inHaring was at a loss to remember all the commandments: "So the minute I get to Bordeaux, I ask for a bible! Painting an angel along with a mother and child on the coffin of his friend Yves Arman, who died in a car crash, transcended mere decoration to become a ritual act of healing.

Haring's fundamental religiosity, on the other hand, was also influenced by his interest in so-called "primitive" cultures, their myths and rituals and totemic objects - interests that inform the artist's pseudo-African masks, for example. Haring's use of traditional Christian imagery is particularly explicit in Apocalypsehis first collaboration with William Burroughs.

Each composition is a reprise on a collaged image taken from advertising, art history or Catholic theology. In addition to a Christ with a bleeding heart, the series includes an advertisement from the s significantly, the period of Haring's own infancy in which a mother tenderly - and, by implication, Madonna-like - leans over her baby to offer him a milk-bottle.

The explicitly Catholic allusions continue in Haring's next collaboration with Burroughs - the suite of etchings entitled The Valley. Here the imagery includes the torso of a male figure inserting a knife beneath his ribs to duplicate one of Christ's stigmata. This belated "embrace" of Catholic symbology aligns Haring even more closely with other prominent creative rebels: with Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol and Haring's street-wise friend and sometime-collaborator Madonna. For those three taboo-breaking artists the Catholic religion offered an especially fertile field for rebellion.

There is a kind of poetic logic in the fact that Haring's collaborations with Burroughs mark the end of his career, since it began with the mock New York Post headlines inspired by the cut-up technique Burroughs employed in Naked Lunch. The artist, furthermore, seems to have felt an intuitive sympathy for a surrealistic juxtaposition of images - partly inspired by his own use of hallucinogenic drugs, but also by his acquaintance with the works of Burroughs and the Beat-generation poets.

A sentence from Burroughs' Soft Machine, published inmight almost describe a composition by Haring: "Carl walked a long row of living penis urns whose penis has absorbed the body with vestigial arms and legs breathing through purple fungoid gills Inthe artist told an interviewer that the author was "very into a lot of the world I've depicted, especially in the recent things - sex, mutations, weird science fiction situations.

Timothy Leary, self-proclaimed guru of the acid age, remarked of the first Haring-Burroughs collaboration, Apocalypse, that it was "like Dante and Titian getting together. On March 20,Haring made the following remark in his journal: "I always knew, since I was young, that I would die young. But I thought it would be fast an accident, not a disease. In fact, a man-made disease like AIDS. Time will tell that I am not scared.

I live everyday as if it were the last. I love life. Yet in the same journal entry which included the vigorous assertion of his love for life, Haring composed the following reaction to the news that the policemen accused of killing Michael Stewart had all been acquitted:.

I hope in their next life they are tortured like they tortured him. They should be birds captured early in life, put in cages, purchased by a fat, smelly, ugly lady who keeps them in a small dirty cage up near the ceiling while all day she cooks bloody sausages and the blood spatters their cage and the frying fat burns their matted feathers and they can never escape the horrible fumes of her burnt meat.

One day the cage will fall to the ground and a big fat ugly cat will kick them about, play with them like a toy, and slowly kill them and leave their remains to be accidentally stepped on by the big fat pink lady who can't see her own feet because of her huge sagging tits.

An eye for an eye Like a Bosch-Burroughs vision, the passage indicates the rage Haring could experience when confronted with social and political injustice. For an understanding of the artist's oeuvre as a whole, however, it is important to observe that in the journal entry for a single day, remarks of a tender, Christian-like nature - "I'm sure when I die, I won't really die, because I live in many people,"17 - are followed by fulminations of Old Testament rage. Yet this dichotomy in no sense represents a contradiction; far more, it is symptomatic of the complexity of the artist's vision.

It is an underlying duality which make the early works more than naive cartoons, the late ones more than angry odes to man's mortality. Fitted out with the wings necessary to ascend into heaven and the shackles drawing him down into the fire and brimstone of hell, Keith Haring demonstrated an astonishingly precocious grasp of the inherent ambiguities of his generation, of his age.

He was the loving, lusting, break-dancing, quintessential American boy, but also an untiring, uncompromising social critic, and he was doomed to die young of a disease that decimated his generation.

I suppose it's some people are sexual but others are not and then of course there are many in between. I'm sure many people get tired or lose interest in sex as they get older and lose self esteem or dare I say it pretend to be pure in mind. As you might have guessed already I am one of the former as it might not be quite like when I was a teenager and had to stop thinking about sex all the time as it might drive on crazy and yes I get lows but but my continuous sexual highs can last many weeks.

But I think having a strong sex drive is a sign of a healthy mind and I'm sure it helps to keep me young which is another good reason for turning myself into Jojo and seeing myself as more of a player.

Of course I should keep it to myself but it's nice to share. Last year I decided that I was going to start reading more and I read books. This year, I wanted to up my game a little bit and do more like a reading marathon and ended up the year reading books, a book for every day. Even though I am a pretty athletic person, I can't run because it hurts my knees. I am not as graceful and elegant as I would need to be for professional dance and sports has never interested me. But reading is the one thing I can do and I like to do at the gym, on planes, in bed, and in the bathtub primarily.

I didn't read to show off but to escape the reality of our current country's political situation and to learn more about the lives and perspectives of others unlike me. I can say that I really enjoyed the vast majority of the books I've read and don't have any significant regrets for this reading marathon.

I should also note that, although some of these books did come out inmany did not. The following are my favorite books of this year that I read this year regardless of their original publication date. I know I am also probably forgetting some and I feel remiss in that too, but I spent hours writing the following even longer than that reading these and I hope some of you get some good recommendations of books you might also like to read or can connect with me on a book you have read.

Feel free to share your favorites as well! I am highly interested in having conversations about books and finding out about literature I may have had less exposure to living in America.

This book is an astounding work that covers so many different states and personal backgrounds to reflect on race in America. If you like Humans of New York, this is a little like that in the sense that it explores what makes us human but it's a great more complex and thorough than that-maybe a Humans of America.

The fact that Guo and Vulchi were able to travel all across the US to gain an understanding of so many people and how their race has affected their lives is a daring and meaningful venture in and of itself but it's also clear that they make a concerted effort to explore the things these people like and enjoy so that there's a fuller sense to some things they have in common with others.

In addition, the photographs of these people really add to a sense of them. We must change in our country. We must develop more empathy and patience. We must be able to listen to others who we think we share nothing in common with and find the things we do share whilst respecting individual differences.

This is the only way we will be able to heal and move forward. This is a harrowing read, especially because there is truth in the weight of our names as Americans being tied to the deep sins of mistreating other humans. This is also, however a very poetic read, haunting in its lyrical quality and in the way that Luiselli is able to adeptly convey the range of emotions she feels, desperate and distraught but also so very insightful.

You will read these pages wit your heart in your throat, worry that if you are not careful, you may actually end of swallowing it. Can Xue is not understood fully by probably most people and I myself had to read several sentences over again a few times, especially this work, the most esoteric of what I've read three novels and one short story collection this year.

The imagery is especially potent here and you don't really know exactly what is happening in the way the human form can transform. You really don't know quite what could be actually happening This would be a book I would read at the end of the world cuddled under a blanket and remembering the most imaginative humans could be then hoping there were some creatives still left out in the tundra of the world.

Another new author I discovered was Karen Tei Yamashita and, though I also enjoyed reading a collection of her plays entitled Anime Wong, I even more so enjoyed reading this novel. Yamashita is Japanese American but you get more of that specific perspective from her plays. Set between Japan and Brazil, this novel features a very vivid cast of interesting characters not to mention the protagonist that is the rotating ball in front of the Japanese train conductor's head. This is one of the most unique books I have ever read in my life and it's no surprise that the forward is from one of the most highly intelligent authors in the world, Percival Everett.

This novel is a real treat and is a riveting surreal adventure. I've spent many years not knowing very much at all about the lives of those who live in North Korea, much as the citizens of North Korea have spent their lives knowing not too much about others outside of their country.

This non fiction work follows the lives of North Koreans who escape into China and South Korea and manage to be granted refugee status and follows them up until the early s. It's another book that disarms you in its brutality. Demick records the stories of their lives, how they bought into propaganda, and how they started to gather inklings of the truth while they were in their home country. The depth of the poverty and brainwashing is immense from the time that these people are schoolchildren.

Even if they were starving, if someone came by and saw that their picture of Kim Jong-il then Kim Jong-un weren't immaculate, they could be taken and forced into a labor camp.

Which of the two music extracts best matches the description? Listen and say. Which sister Meg, Jo, Beth or Amy What parts of the text helped you find the answers? Then use your dictionary to explain the words in bold. It was a comfortable old room, though the carpet was faded and the furniture very plain; for a good picture or two hung on the walls, books filled the 10 shelves, chry.

Amy, though the youngest, was a most important person - in her own opinion at least. A regular snow-maiden, with blue eyes and yellow hair curling on her shoulders, pale and slender, and 40 always carrying herself like a young lady mindful of her mourners. What the characters of the four sisters were, we will leave to be found out.

Meg, the eldest' of the four, was sixteen, and very pretty, being plump and fair, with large eyes. Fifteen-year-old Jo was very tall, thin and brown, and reminded one of a colt-; for she never seemed to know what to do with her long limbs, which were 20 very much in her way. She had a decisive mouth, a comical nose and sharp, grey eyes, which appeared to see everything, and could be fierce, funny or thoughtful.

Her long, thick hair was her one beauty; but it was usually bundled in a net. Jo had round shoulders, big hands and feet, a fly-away look to her clothes and the uncomfortable appearance of a girl who was rapidly shooting up into a woman and didn't like it.

Elizabeth - or Beth, as everyone called her was a rosy, smooth-haired, bright-eyed girl of thirteen, with a shy manner, a timid voice and a peaceful expression, which was seldom disturbed. Meg stopped lecturing and lighted the lamp, Amy got out of the armchair without being asked, and Jo forgot how 50 tired she was as she sat up to hold the slippers nearer to the fire.

Saw Ai spun around and marched out of the room, notebook in hand, heading into the bushes with the boys. Saw Ai emptied the textbooks in her schoolbag onto an old newspaper, then piled a stack of newspapers on top, until her history, Chinese language, and math books were completely buried.

Saw Ai nestled into another stack of papers, behind a big pile of wood. Her sister was inside and poked her head over the windowsill to watch us, her hair so messy that she looked like a hedgehog. As soon as she got it there, her sister found a gap in the wood and continued to stare at us with her huge eyes.

We walked off to the other side of the house, where there were more newspapers and piles of wood, along with sacks of lime, a gas barrel, and a pair of mud-caked trousers. She had been stripped naked and thrown into the gutter, her whole face covered in blood. Life was very stressful that month. My mom had to escort me to school, and every day the newspapers and TV channels ran all kinds of rape and murder stories.

The most famous one was about a female architect from America, who was burned to death in a sewer pipe by the side of the expressway, not so far from our house. The police were all out looking for the culprit. My cousin said it was a shame. Saw Ai was sitting on a fruit box now, looking furious, arms crossed. I peeled strips of wood off the box, thinking that if I peeled off long enough strips then maybe I could twist them into a rope like people used to do in the olden days.

The narrow road up the slope was covered in muddy footprints and tracks from bike wheels. The air smelled like car exhaust. We could hear the metallic shriek of the welding yard in the distance, mixed with the rap of a spoon against a metal window bar, both sounds cutting sharply across the dull roar of the traffic.

Her sister started swearing at us, using really filthy words about my mom and dad. My arms were breaking out in little bumps from mosquito bites.

It was quite a lot to take. But neither of us could understand why a person would suddenly become so greedy.

They had attached an extension cable and moved the fridge into the woodshed on the other side of the house. Saw Ai locked the door bolt in place and jumped down the front steps with the key chain dangling from her hand, shaking it in a rhythm, like one of the bells that count the beat in folk dances.

Rays of sun broke through the clouds, landing in a bright halo on her hair. Her skin was dark and shiny with sweat, like the skin of the boys at school who had to stand in the sun every day. She had successfully locked her sister inside the house; the grownups were out, so she had to deal with the fat-pig ox-woman all by herself. Saw Ai went into the woodshed and took a bottle of water out of the fridge. She drank a big gulp, then passed it to me.

We worked together to stack up wooden crates, pushing them over toward the window, which we opened to let the breeze in. The traffic on the expressway provided fuzzy ambient noise. Light bored in through cracks in the wood and the holes left by nails, making a kind of starry stage backdrop. An old calendar was pasted onto the zinc wall opposite, the bodies of the featured female celebrities distorted by ripples in the sheeting.

Saw Ai did a sexy catwalk across the fruit crates; my job was to raise the curtain. Stand out from the crowd, create a new you. Pair this tasseled shawl in coffee-colored wool with a long linen slit skirt for a romantic, bohemian look.

Saw Ai narrowed her eyes and sashayed across the stage. When she waved, her spread fingers looked ready to shoot beams of light, and I clapped loudly. It was amazing. The messy junk transformed into our rapt audience. I picked up a newspaper and folded it into pleats, then started to play it like an accordion.

Each time the curtain went back, we skipped to a different season, or jetted across the Atlantic Ocean to stroll the streets of New York. Saw Ai was in heaven. She said she was definitely going to be a model.

She started to dance. We were both wearing vest tops and jean shorts. Saw Ai shook her long, shapely legs, showing me how I ought to dance on Saturday nights, and I laughed until I could hardly breathe. She spun around and around. What could they have said? No boys appeared, but the goldfish man did. The gross goldfish man came and ruined our fun. He stood behind the woodshed window watching us, laughing so hard it looked like his eyes were really going to pop out of his head.

He scared us. I felt like I was seeing a ghost. We started to scream. I called him a pervert, and Saw Ai was so high-pitched she could have shaken the roof off. He dodged the water bottle I threw at him. When he turned back to face us, he seemed really angry. This is no good at all. I need to have words with your dad, leaving two girls at home by themselves is incredibly risky.

This is not a safe place. What were we supposed to do? He had a big hard-backed folder under his arm and when we ran out of the shed we knocked it to the ground. The papers inside scattered like leaves. He chased around behind us but it was no use, the wind blew them away. Still, after a couple more steps he caught up with me.

I kicked him as hard as I could. Let me in to have a little chat with your big sister. There have been so many victims, many many many, you need to stick together, stand up, have the courage to speak out. He talked faster and faster and his eyes were all red, as if his puffy goldfish eye sockets were going to spurt tears at any moment. Maybe his sadness was real, but I was so scared I was screaming for my life.

Maybe he just wanted to listen to us scream. In one, a policeman was pulling a totally naked woman out of a freezer. Each picture was like a comic strip, showing us crime scenes in different settings, from different angles.

The back of the door and all the walls were splattered with blood, and a group of policemen was there investigating. Did he just want to be our friend? Or was he some weirdo who wanted to scare us? We got down on our knees and tried to collect all the photos instead.

The wind was strong that day and blew the photos so far that we had to go down into the bushes at the bottom of the slope to find them. In this fictional story from poet M.

Navin, an antiques dealer faces a personal and professional dilemma when presented with a lost recording by real-life pop singer and assassin Mona Fandey.

After scanning around him, the man pulled a cassette out of his green cloth bag. He put it back discreetly. I already had an RCA cassette on me, a total flop when they hit the market. Probably I also had a zero value Philips from I waved him away. Interested parties call ahead and figure out the specifics. But the man looked old, and I kept the window open out of respect, if nothing else. He wore a songkok—he must have come from Friday prayers. His stringy silver beard accentuated his narrow features.

But this cassette is more valuable. I invited him in. Is he still around? Perhaps death is nothing more than one more bit of news after a certain age.

It was very dusty, and rusted. He thought cleaning it would decrease its value, so it remained caked with earth. Some were rented out to exhibitions but never found their way back. It was tiring to explain myself. Who can I trade with, in a place like this, the Jerantut hinterland?

In years past, my father had foreign tourists as customers, those that came to Taman Negara. After he passed away, they stopped coming. The house is up for sale, too. He bought the land on this hill to build a house for that very reason. The doors of this house were always open then, as if it were a gallery. It brought in a nice breeze. Besides, I have another job. He was turning over an antique iron in his hands when I brought him his water. He frowned at the answer. I started to get annoyed with my agents, but once again kept my thoughts to myself.

Though they look like roses. The Chinese will pay far more for the peonies. I was really losing my patience now. Dad would spout the same nonsense, had for thirty-five years. In interviews on television, in newspapers. With a big smile. Keep them, he said, till their time. The added value of time was a tenet of the business.

The man stared at me with an odd look. He was a good businessman after all. I checked my watch—it was nearing three. Driving out and back in the dark jungle was dangerous.

And apparently there were elephants about. The architect who built Kuala Kangsar's palace without nails. Built this with the leftover wood. He was a genius. Cornered, I joined him on a metal chair nearby. Up close, his eyes had a milky glaze. Probably cataracts. I was a boy then. She cut the corpse into eighteen pieces and buried them around her house, yes? It gives me the creeps to think of the way she smiled on the way to court. Every time. It was the same smile as the day she was arrested.

She beheaded Mazlan with a single swing of the ax. And before she did that, she asked him to lie down on the floor and imagine himself being showered with gold. Apparently she was plucking flowers from her garden just before the murder. Our offices only had SLRs. Actually I prefer selling old tech. Most profitable these days. The ax, the long parangs, the sharp knives. This was no rush job.

Mona and her husband had really seen to the details. The right and left hand had been chopped off at the exact same point. The right to three pieces, the left to two. Same with the legs. The head had been split open.

I captured them all, one by one. I then got permission to take photos of her bomoh sorcery wares. A police officer came in with me. The house was really big.

I took as many as possible. That was when. He was working up a sweat. I switched on the fan and went to open the door. Everything in the room screamed that she was a singer. He looked quite different without it.

The top of his balding head was smooth, with some dark spots. He was still sweating. I offered him some water again. In those brief moments, I searched the whole room. Given that the police were going to investigate, I tied a piece of cloth to my hand, to cover my prints. I saw a pretty glass box. Hard to open without leaving prints. Inside, there was a smaller wooden box. I put that in my pocket and returned downstairs. And these were massive headlines.

Nobody questioned anything. I decided on the headline images. I began to run the numbers in my head. Such a thing could fetch a good price on the black market.

It would be as easy as a wire transfer. I hid my greed and let him speak. But you know, the man arrested with her, Affendi, was her third husband. There were special rates for things that came with letters. Sometimes handwriting can quadruple rates. She says she wrote the lyrics herself and had sung the songs with genuine feeling. She also wrote that she would die soon, and that she wanted the songs released as an album after her death, in case there were still fans out there.

I lived with work colleagues at the time. I was afraid my secret would be found out if I played it. I was afraid of arrest. Her songs were always on the radio. The public knew her voice. Plus, I was just too scared to listen. I watched Ismail with renewed keenness.

Inventing stories to jack up the price—a common trick. I hid the cassette in a cupboard. I only kept the letter in my shirt pocket. I read it and reread it. It was always with me. Can I see it? The letter robbed me of my peace. So over time, it tore, with a hole in the middle. One day, overcome with anxiety, I burned it.

Yes, now the letter is in me. I read them, but none of them stuck with me. Perhaps she had studied calligraphy. The missive had roman letters written in an Arabic form on an unlined sheet. Surrounded by musical notes. The words were separated, as if torn apart. But seeing that many Malays like Hindustani music, I thought it might be the case with her.

I researched that raga just so I could perhaps understand the letter more. Get it out of my system that way. But no, too late, memorizing the letter through the raga only made it a part of me. I rued the loss of a few thousand ringgit. She was quite the bomoh—perhaps this was her revenge. I kept reciting the letter to myself. It went from poem to song in me, always resonating from within.

I thought it might spill over to others when I spoke to them, and began avoiding people. I eventually quit and began farming in my old village. After her hanging inI totally lost it. I felt her soul was waiting for the cassette. How do you intend to prove these are her songs? He stayed silent. His eyes were red. I have no other reason to come and tell you such crazy things about myself.

My daughter is getting married. My son-in-law is a high-ranking police official—the wedding needs to be grand. And then, maybe, I could also have some peace. And if it is really Mona on there. But I have no idea how to do these things. I spent a couple of nights here, interviewing him. You were still a boy then.

Your father was interested in music. I calculated again. Past that, we were talking millions. The Malay music industry would snap it up. The competition would drive the price higher.

People made up all sorts of things for a payout these days. His breathing quickened, he was clearly enraged. Nothing I could do about that though. I took out the Saloma LP that he liked. As he frowned, I pointed to the middle of the disc. But the information in the middle here is typed, not handwritten. The previous editions of this LP had handwritten details in the middle—they are now worth more than five thousand. Tears began to form at edge of Ismail's eyes.

We need to check if there have been other recordings or copies of this. The selling price can only be determined after a thorough vetting process. First, removing evidence from a crime scene. And a cassette, at that. The letter could have revealed further suspects. I glanced at my watch and feigned surprise. Ismail sat very still, eyes downcast. I could see his hand trembling slightly, nerves maybe.

The sight of him that way gave me great joy. Significant profits awaited. I can tell stories too. More logical ones that increase value. During her heyday, whenever Mona smiled, the public became frightened and curious. A smile free of regret. Derived from "klep", see above. Monochrome - A corporate executive.

Derived from the prevalence of black and white in corporate fashion styles such as Neo-Militarism, primarilyas opposed to the more colorful streetwear.

Far more charged and derisive than "monochrome". Pineapple Faces Big Day - Revenge - Pineapple Face (Cassette) - Junk, garbage, crap, detritus. Calling someone a "scopmuncher" is exactly as insulting as you think.

Also the label for a synthetic protein supplement, standing for Single Cell Organic Protein, and considered to be poverty-level food of last resort. Most Rippers also act as trauma surgeons and primary care physicians for those who, for various reasons, don't want to seek aid from a corp-owned medical facility.

Funny Background Event : Johnny tends to hang in the background in most main plot and more important sidequest missions. Only V can see him, so he can pretty much do whatever he'd want without anyone else noticing him. In "Life During Wartime", he paces around the hotel room V and Hellman are talking, lying down on one of the beds and walking over another one.

In "Gimme Danger", he will appear lounging on a railing, and will drop down the building V and Takemura are on when he gets frustrated with Takemura's loyalty to Saburo. Futuristic Jet Injector : Gun-like jet injectors appear to be ubiquitous in the Night City, particularly with ripperdocs like Viktor, who uses one early in the game to sedate V's right arm while he grafts a ballistic augmentation onto their palm.

Gaia's Lament : Much like in the original source material, the planet is in rough shape, especially around Night City. Desertification is common, the rain is more acidic than not, and pretty much every natural body of water in and around Night City is some form of biohazardous. On the fauna side, animals are almost unheard of, due to the environmental devastation and several wildlife-borne diseases that started several human pandemics as well, and resulted in deliberate exterminations that essentially wiped out the few animals that managed to survive the pollution and diseases.

The worst part? No one cares. When an environmentalist tries to explain the horrific side effects that have been caused by killing off all birds, the talk show host brings out a woman who lost her children to Bird Flu and makes the environmentalist confront her. Game-Breaking Bug : It came to light that there's a hard cap of eight megabytes for a save file. Hitting this limit can and will cause your save data to become corrupted and irrecoverable. This is caused mostly by hoarding items, as the game has to note how many items you have and each item's individual stats, which adds up fairly quickly.

The issue was fixed in one of the first post-release updates, but the fix wasn't retroactive, so those players who had already lost their save data at this point were still out of luck. Gameplay and Story Segregation : One side mission has a Fixer send V after someone after they went out of control and killed all the guards and the driver during what was supposed to be a hijacking, claiming it drew too much attention and ire.

And a lot of the time they just ignore it. At no point can V point out they're a One-Man Army that might have already killed everyone there on their own, including the old owner, the last time they went and that they don't need any help.

Just like any open world RPG the player is free to make V run around killing innocent people and cops during free roam. Outside of getting the attention of cops for however briefly they bother to attack you there's never any lasting consequences for this and none of V's friends and acquaintances ever mention them going on a killing spree. Missions that require you to remove your weapons always ignore all models of V's potentially cyber-weaponized forearms or a cyberdeck full of hostile quickhacks and act as if they're disarmed once they toss their weapons.

Particularly noticeable in Konpeki Plaza where, with enough grinding, the player can purchase said cyberware but when put through a weapons scan comes up clean. It's especially egregious when you remember that in the Cyberpunk lore, combat cybernetics are actually more dangerous than guns themselves, and even someone with just a single cyber-weapon can stil mow down swaths of gun-toting citizens before being brought down.

If you go for the Temperance ending with the Aldecaldos' help, the game gets confused and treats Rogue as both alive and dead at the same time - Johnny-in-V's-body goes to the cemetery to mourn Rogue's death, only to get a call from her during the credits in which she verbally rips into him for what he allowed to happen.

It's possible that this ending was originally restricted to Johnny's version of the final mission before it was made available as an option for all choices except The Devil.

In gameplay V can heal from Pineapple Faces Big Day - Revenge - Pineapple Face (Cassette) wounds, explosions and melee attacks by inhaling a Maxdoc or injecting a Bounceback, which are in plentiful supply all around the city. In the story wounds are portrayed far more realistically. Jackie bleeds out after the failed heist with V desperately yelling at Delamain to take him to a ripperdoc rather than just injecting Jackie with either of the two drugs.

Attacking gangs never leads to any long lasting consequences. While every other gang member in the area will be hostile the faction as a whole never seems to hold a grudge against the lone merc who kills dozens if not hundreds of them in NCPD missions or free roam.

During the scene where V gets his or her first implants besides the Militech cyberdeck that he or she starts the game withV may comment on the Kiroshi optics, gushing over how they are "top shelf tech". In gameplay terms, however, these are the most rudimentary optical implants the player can receive, and they can be traded in for a superior version at almost any ripperdoc in the city. Whether they're further upgraded or not, the supposed quality of V's optics is never brought up again by anyone.

It gets even weirder when you realize that Kiroshi is the only optics manufacturer whose products V can purchase; there's literally no in-game competition.

The game has a huge problem with keeping Johnny's and V's relationship consistent between the main story and sidequests. It's all too common to get into massive bitching contests with Johnny during a main quest, only to turn into instant best buddies in the next sidequest because quest dialogue doesn't change regardless of where in the overarching narrative you choose to do the side content.

Even if you choose for V to kill themself, Johnny just accepts it after a moment of anger. Even if you chose Arasaka and never said a bad thing about the company and only vocally disagreed with Johnny at every choice at that point, he acts like you're betraying yourself even if you really are the V you started as. Various characters and news casts point out how toxic the water in and around Night City is, but no matter how long V swims or even dives in lakes, river or the Pacific, they never suffer any ill effects.

Gangbangers : The "Gangs of Night City" featurette showcases several of the gangs, including the ones revealed earlier: the MaelstromVoodoo Boyzthe Animals and the Moxes. Gang of Hats : The gangs are visually, ideologically and criminally distinct: The Animals are roided-up bodybuilders used as muscle for hire. The Sixth Street are gun-toting Eaglelanders clad in military gear who started as a Vigilante Militia before falling into crime themselves.

The Tyger Claws are Yakuza who behave more like Japanese Delinquents favoring melee weapons dabbling in prostitution and rackets. The Maelstromers are augmented to the point of being grotesque and take their names out of the Norse Mythology, fittingly dealing in illegal cyberware and assorted activities. The Valentinos are stereotypical Central and South American gangsters with added gold-plated cybernetics. The Scavengers' rank-and-file behave like gopniki Russian hoodlums while their higher-ups take more from The Mafiya.

The Wraiths are a gang comprised of Raffen Shiv; Nomads exiled from their clans for heinous acts. They have a Desert Punk style to them. Gas Mask Mooks : Trauma Team personnel always have masks on to ensure they won't be afflicted with any potential airborne poisons, pathogens or illnesses while treating incapacitated patients.

You can also hook up with joytoys regardless of yours and theirs genders. Meredith Stout is available as a one-night stand for any V, which is completely missable if you don't speak to her correctly.

Gayngster : Same-sex romances and sexual encounters are available to the player for both male and female V, allowing you to play as a deadly hired gun operating in the Night City underworld who just happens to be gay or bi.

Gender Bender : In the Temperance ending Johnny takes over V's body, which leads to this if you're playing as a female V. Man, I Feel Like a Woman can be averted or played straight, as Johnny can tell his new sidekick in the ending that he won't be a woman much longer, implying some corrective surgery is already lined up.

Gender Is No Object : Women, men, and people of other genders seem to be about equal in the grand scheme of things: There are female ripperdocs, edgerunners, policewomen and soldiers.

The most respected fixer in the city, Rogue, is a woman. Alt was a brilliant and well-known netrunner when she was alive, and Judy is considered one of the best braindance editors out there.

Female V can be everything a male V can be. Nobody has any objections when Saul appoints Panam as the second Pineapple Faces Big Day - Revenge - Pineapple Face (Cassette) to the Aldecaldos, nor do they have any issues if she starts leading them by herself after his death in "The Star" ending. Even a company very heavily tied to traditions like Arasaka has no problems with Hanako taking over after her father's death in "The Devil" ending.

Amusingly, even all the gangs have male and female members and seem to allow everyone to rise in the ranks on the same terms and allows women to become leaders Suzy Q is the leader of the Moxes, Ofelia can become a leader of Maelstrom, The Voodoo Boyz are led by Mama Brigitte and Tyger Claws and Animals have high-ranking female members. That being said, women especially sex workers do tend to be victims of various forms of sexual assault by a wide margin; the Mox were explicitly formed by sex workers who felt it was safer look out for one-another.

Ghost Town : Rocky Ridge is a direct example: planned development of suburban area that was swiftly abandoned when construction was deemed no longer economically viable. Other, smaller examples can be found around the Night City Badlands. Dialogue with Panam while en route to Rocky Ridge mentions that there are thousands such abandoned settlements dotted across North America.

Pacifica is a former luxury oceanside resort that was left abandoned in the wake of the Unification War. Now part of its luxury hotels are filled with gangs and homeless squatters while a significant portion is walled off and known as the "Combat Zone". Gilligan Cut : In the E3 gameplay, V denies Jackie's prediction that they will spend everything on a three-day bender. In the next cut, they are shown waking up Another one happens in "The Gig" trailer: after T-Bug says "Preferably no bodies, not one", Jackie and V are shown going guns blazing through a bar.

Glowing Mechanical Eyes : A shorthand for the characters using the Net is their eyes glowing blue. Other colors are possible, like the Afterlife's bouncer's eyes glowing orange when he contacts Dex DeShawn over the local subnet.

Golden Ending : Averted. Despite the game having multiple endings, none of them can be considered purely "good" without any drawbacks. V will always either die, or will have six months to live, with unclear probability of finding the cure. What most players would consider the best ending would be "The Star", with Judy or Panam romanced and all the other character sidequests finished.

There's also the "Temperance" ending, where Johnny takes over V's body with their consent, but even that ending is very melancholic and bittersweet. The Valentinos' visual style revolves entirely around gold. Their guns, their cyberware, their jewelry, even their cars are gold-plated all over. Some high-ranking Valentinos have more gold on their body than any other color. Gone Horribly Right : Richard Night envisioned Night City as an enviroment of a new age of enlightened capitalismcompletely planned, self-sufficient, safe from crime and multicultural.

He didn't take into account that "new age capitalism" turned out to be anything but enlightened, making Night City ugly, poorly planned, and torn apart by crime. At least it is multicultural Good Prosthetic, Evil Prosthetic : the Maelstrom favor red, black and silver cybernetics with an inhuman look including glowing Extra EyesV prefers flesh-colored cybernetic arms and discreet optic implants with subtle, scar-like wiring on the face. One advertisement around the city shows some BDSM imagery with the slogan "Zeig dich" - "show yourself".

Grenade Spam : Enemies that carry grenades have an infinite supply of them, so either take them out quickly or prepare for having assorted explosives chucked your way every couple of seconds. On the other hand, with grenades being cheap to craft and able to stunlock just about everything including bosses, this is an easy way to beat almost any Boss Battle with a minimum of fuss.

Groin Attack : Skippy is a smart pistol that can be tuned to Puppy-Loving Pacifist mode, where he only shoots people in the groin. This Crosses the Line Twice when he sometimes shoots prematurely and apologizes for it. One early-game side mission is about an unfortunate dude who's suffering a constant and very painful version thanks to his defective Mr. Stud penis implant. Black Comedy at its finest. Guide Dang It! During the quest where Takemura kidnaps Hanako to talk to her about her brother's betrayal and murder of her father, he takes her to a hotel that gets raided by Arasaka soldiers and the floor collapses under you.

V says that they need to save Takemura, but Johnny says that it's too late and that V needs to get out of there. There's a secret objective where you CAN go back to save Takemura, but the game in a rare instance doesn't give you ANY hints about this. You just have to go looking for a way back through purely your own volition or by accident.

There are certain strands of sidequests that, when completed, will unlock additional endings. Unlocking the secret ending requires not only completing a certain sidequest, but selecting a very specific set of dialogue options throughout it. There is absolutely nothing in the game to indicate any of this. There is a very powerful Epic Iconic Smart Pistol with an AI attached, Skippy, that is picked up in an alley on one of the locally triggered sidequests. In Stone Cold Killer mode, his Smart tracking aims at the head, making him one of the most powerful pistols in the entire game, and in Puppy Loving Pacifist mode, his smart tracking aims at the legs, making him one of the worst Iconic weapons in the game.

Any normal player would obviously pick the far superior headshot mode at the start. The catch? One of Judy's missions involves a sleazy scumbag of a ripperdoc called Fingers. You get multiple very tempting opportunities to beat him up during his interrogation, but doing so even once prevents you from using his services later on, and he sells several unique implants and cyberware upgrades you can't find anywhere else.

Almost all cyberware including the legendary variants can be found in the world for free, saving you a lot of cash and SC grinding, but the chances of tracking them down without a guide are remote.

And then Update 1. The trademark perk of Power weapons is their ability to ricochet their projectiles off of any solid surface. One of the two starter implants you get from Viktor is a Ballistic Pineapple Faces Big Day - Revenge - Pineapple Face (Cassette) in V's palm that allegedly allows you to see the ricochet trajectory.

Nowhere is it mentioned that you also need a specific eye upgrade to actually enable this feature. The relative obscurity of the cyberware upgrade menu while trading with ripperdocs means that many players don't realize these upgrades even exist, extending the problem to almost all cyberware in some way. The player can go through the entire game without meeting Kerry and River, two out of four romance options with their own arcs and sidequests.

River's sidequest gets added to your questlog automatically after a certain point in the main story, but you have no obligation to actually fulfill it. Kerry's questline is even more hidden, because it requires completing almost the entirety of Johnny's questchain, with no indication that it will unlock Kerry.

Kerry's questline also comes very late in the game, at the tail end of act two, right before the ending.

After discovering them, romancing them is fairly simple doing their questline and choosing a few dialogue optionsbut many players missed them entirely.

Unlocking "The Star" ending, widely considered the best one by the fans, requires completing Panam's entire questline. This is the only other ending that has to be unlocked that drastically changes the game's epilogue since " Don't Fear The Reaper"'s one is a slightly modified "The Sun" epilogue, to the point where the two are often lumped together and simply called "Path of Glory".

While Panam is an important character to the plot and one of the romance options, the player will likely do many sidequests for tons of different characters, with no indication that this specific questline will unlock something so significant. It's also worth noting that the three other love interests don't unlock any other ending's, it's just Panam. The game contains several legendary outfit sets, each following a specific theme like cop, media or fixer.

Not only is this mentioned absolutely nowhere, most of the outfit pieces are also fiendishly well-hidden in places few players would ever look. If you complete the sidequest before your stats are high enough to open the door, you have no reason to ever go back there again and will never know there was a legendary item on the other side.

Worse, some of these items are found during main missions in locations that are impossible to revisit after the mission concludes. Gun Fu : The actual name of an achievement you get for quickly killing three enemies with a handgun at close range note specifically, within 3. The devs all but confirmed that the whole thing is yet another tribute to Keanu Reevesparticularly John Wick.

Guns Akimbo : The weapon of choice for Jackie Welles. V can eventually obtain Jackie's guns, both of them, but can only use one at a time, which makes them the only iconic gun you can wield and display on V's Wall of Weapons simultaneously. Guns Do Not Work That Way : Real Life revolvers, barring some very rare exceptions, are generally incapable of mounting a suppressor due to their lack of sealing between the cylinder and the barrel making it useless anyway.

CP not only ignores this completely, it turns revolvers into the best stealth guns in the game thanks to a combination of massive single-shot damage and often enormous headshot damage multipliers enabling easy One-Hit Kills on all but the most elite enemies. However, this can be explained by suggesting that in all revolvers have some kind of gas seal, Nagant-style or otherwise.

Ajax assault rifle supposed to have 5. Said magazine is very long with noticeable curve, similar to Real Life round 7. On the same note, Johnny's Malorian pistol is stated to have enormous 14mm caliber. It's magazine placement makes sense, but its size way to small to hold 10 rounds of such dimensions.

Hacker Cave : The Voodoo Boyz' base of operations, full of computers, screens and, of course, hackers. Hacking Minigame : Breach Protocol is a gameplay feature that plays an important role in the quickhacking mechanic; so much so that one of the two Intelligence skill trees is entirely devoted to it.

Benefits range from crippling enemies in a variety of ways as soon as combat breaks out, to drawing large sums of money from the countless access points around Night City. The minigame itself consists of a square matrix of double-digit code snippets on the left side of the screen and a randomly generated list of code sequences on the right side that correspond to whatever daemons you have available for upload into the target network.

The input sequence always starts from the topmost line and must alternate between lines and columns after each code snippet. How many daemons you can upload is limited by time, but primarily by your cyberdeck's buffer size, which provides one of the main incentives for buying better cyberdecks. The random sequences are usually generated in a way that allows you to chain them together for maximum efficiency, and figuring out how best to accomplish this is key to mastering the minigame.

Thankfully, Save Scumming is a viable option in all but a handful of situations. Hand Cannon : There are quite a few massive handguns in circulation in Night City, but the most impressive examples are the Burya and the Liberty, respectively a bulky tech revolver of Soviet origin and a power near-exact copy of the Automag V that fires slowly but with tremendous power.

Honorable mention goes to Johnny's Malorian Arms pistol that, while not looking particularly huge, is chambered in a custom 14mm caliber, meaning it has a larger bore than a. It's closest real life equivalent would be Pfeifer Zeliska revolver, chambered in. Hard Truth Aesop : A single person or a small group can't reform a corrupt system that spans the entire globe, because they simply lack the means and power to do so, and even if they'll put a dent in it, it will be patched up sooner rather than later.

Some people are their own worst enemy. While the system or an outside agent might make a tempting target for blame, the fact is that sometimes the only one who is to blame for your bad situation is you and your poor choices. While they are arguing over it, a silent alarm goes off and the police catch both of them red-handed.

They are later released by a sympathetic officer and decide not to hold a grudge against each other. Heroic BSoD : V gets two over the course of the game. The first is at the very beginning of Act 2, when they learn that they will eventually die by having their personality overwritten by Silverhand's and that Vik, one of the best ripperdocs in town, can't do anything to save them. The second is at the very end of the game, when V learns that after all their troubles, all they did to still find a way to save themselves, their brain has already suffered too much damage and that, even after being separated from Silverhand, they only have months at most to live.

This is actually foreshadowed somewhat at the end of the tarot-collecting quest "Fool on the Hill," but with significantly less angst; V doesn't know this for sure yet. Hired Guns : Night City has an entire class of deniable mercenaries, so-called "edgerunners", who do dirty jobs for whoever pays enough. V and their companions make their living this way, and while brute force isn't necessarily on the agenda, design or circumstance often conspire to turn any job into a shootout.

Hollywood Hacking : Comes with the setting. With Netrunner skills, you can use hacking not only to break into computers, but also to hijack your enemies' cybernetics and force them to perform Psychic-Assisted Suicideas demonstrated in the Gameplay Deep Dive.

The same video has Sasquatch, the leader of the Animals gang, grab V, plug a cable into her and upload a virus, causing Interface Screw.

Hollywood Silencer : The detachable suppressors V can mount on many Power weapons play the trope completely straight. The only one that at least skirts the edge of realism is the one that's part of Panam's iconic Overwatch sniper rifle. Unlike the normal ones, this suppressor merely reduces the report instead of making it inaudible, so unless you're several dozen meters away from any witnesses, the shot will be heard.

Homing Projectile : The "Smart" weapons can lock onto opponents, allowing you to hit them with minimum aim. They are essentially gyrojet weapons, with projectiles guided wirelessly by the smart gun's targeting computer which interfaces with the shooter through a piece of hand-mounted cyberware built for smart gun interfaces. Hover Tank : The Basilisk armoured transport you can help the Aldecaldo nomad clan steal is one of these - a floating hexagonal lump of metal with a 25mm autocannon turret on top.

This makes it useful for passing over rough terrain and Militech minefields, which is one reason the Aldecaldos who make a great deal of their money from border smuggling want it so badly. The other reason is that it's a Normal Fish in a Tiny Pondwhere the tiny fish it's up against are Raffen Shiv marauders and their ramshackle Desert Punk vehicles. Hyperactive Metabolism : The easiest and cheapest way to heal V is to have them eat any of the food items one can find absolutely everywhere.
