The group toured Germany in early and was signed by Elektra Records, who released 'The Introduction' album mid-year. In he was offered the chance to join Deep Purple, replacing Ritchie Blackmore, and played on all their studio albums from 's 'Purpendicular' onwards. In he began a collaboration with singer Sarah Spencer entitled Angelfire, and an album appeared in Augustafter which he formed Flying Colors inwhich was an American supergroup composed of Mike Portnoy, Dave LaRue, Casey McPherson and Neal Morse, with their debut eponymous album being released in Marchfollowed by 'Second Nature' in Morse continued to act as a session player for a wide variety of artists while still a member of all these bands, playing on over 40 albums after the timeframe of this compilation, but here we concentrate on the emergent talent at the beginning of his career.

Shirley Manson - Noir When Garbage were on hiatus in the second half of the 's, Shirley Manson set about working on a solo album, which reportedly featured a collaboration with Rivers Cuomo, but when she brought the material to her then-label Geffen, she was told it was 'too dark', as they had envisioned Manson having international radio hits and becoming the 'Annie Lennox of her generation'.

She and Geffen subsequently parted ways and she continued working on solo material, and also considered leaving the music industry behind entirely, but then Garbage reunited Never Mind - Cliff Richard And The Shadows* - Heroes Collection (CD) released albums in the 's, and the solo album was put on the back burner. Some of the songs have since appeared online, with 'In The Snow' and 'Pretty Horses' surfacing infollowed by 'Lighten Up' the next year, and Manson posted 'Dark Hearts And Heart Beats' on her Facebook page inbut investigation has discovered that it was copyrighted inand was therefore part of the solo album recordings.

Manson also collaborated with other artists, and provided songs for TV and film soundtracks throughout the decade, and so there are actually enough songs out there to make up a 'solo' album for her. I've done a bit of work on 'Brass Muscles', which was a second piece that appeared on the soundtrack to the TV series 'Wet Hot American Summer', and by repeating the verse and chorus and then adding a coda to fade out I've expanded it to sound like an actual song of almost two minutes.

Even on the collaborations Manson takes most of the lead vocals, and so by mixing her own demos with the duets we end up with a very creditable solo album from her, and as she used to refer to it as her 'noir record', that's what I've called it. Kraftwerk - Pop Und Avantgarde In early Kraftwerk were on the cusp of international recognition with the imminent release of their 'Autobahn' album, when they were asked to perform at the large broadcasting hall of the Hessischer Rundfunk HR1 as part of a festival of music.

The theme was to be various minimalist musical concepts under the title "Between Pop And Avantgarde", with Kraftwerk performing their set on the 25 Januaryand with some of the performances being recorded and broadcast on German radio.

The band played pieces from their three albums, as well as one from the forthcoming 'Autobahn' record, and as it was recorded for radio broadcast the sound quality is excellent. There were some very long announcements in German throughout the broadcast which I've removed or edited out, so that we can enjoy the music uninterrupted, and although I don't usually post live albums, this is of such historical importance that it deserves to be heard, as it features a line-up of the band which never made it to a recording studio.

He'd been working with the E Street Band at his home studio, Telegraph Hill Studios, which was actually a barn at his Holmdel, New Jersey property, and by early August there was an initial cut of 10 songs, with Columbia beginning to believe they might have a new Springsteen record in time for Christmas.

A track sequence was prepared, and in September, Bob Clearmountain was brought in to mix twelve tracks. Springsteen signed off on 'The Ties That Bind', and the tapes were sent off for mastering on October 15, but when they came back he suddenly cancelled the release, and went back to recording more songs.

He later said that he felt the songs lacked the kind of unity and conceptual intensity that he liked his music to have, and his manager and co-producer, Jon Landau, suggested that maybe this record needed to be a double album, in order to encompass everything Springsteen was trying to achieve. After another seven months at the Power Station, the sessions came to an end, and 'The River' was released on October 17,including 20 of the 50 songs that had been recorded.

Springsteen added darker material after he'd written the title track, and the album became noted for its mix of the frivolous next to the solemn, but he confirmed during an interview that this was intentional, as a deliberate contrast to his previous record.

Bootlegs have long circulated of 'The Ties That Bind', generally in excellent quality, as the album was mastered ready for release, but a major upgrade was carried out on the original tapes inmaking them sound even better. What was remarkable in is that most tracks on this 'temporary assembly' of the album remained unreleased, with 'Cindy' being the one major 'River' outtakes that Springsteen was still sitting on, and the alternate verse in 'The Price You Pay' remains lost, while the rockabilly 'You Can Look But You Better Not Touch ' and the double-tracked vocal take of 'To Be True' had never seen the light of day.

The single album was eventually released as one of the discs in the box set release 'The Ties That Bind: The River Collection', but to my ears this bootleg just has the edge over that version, so give it a listen and see if you agree.

Friday, September 17, Hank Marvin Brian Robson Rankin, known professionally as Hank B Harvin, was born on 28 October in Newcastle upon Tyne, and as a child he played banjo and piano, but after hearing Buddy Holly he decided to learn the guitar, and also adopted Holly style dark-rimmed glasses. He chose his stage name while launching his career, being an amalgamation of his childhood nickname Hank, which he used to differentiate himself from friends also named Brian, and the first name of Marvin Rainwater, the country and rockabilly singer.

He was considering Tony Sheridan, but instead he offered Marvin the position, which he accepted on condition that Welch could join as well, and so both became members of The Drifters, as Richard's group was then known.

To avoid confusion with the American vocal group of the same name, The Drifters changed theirs to The Shadows, and both with and without Richard they ruled the UK charts throughout the 60's. In he was asked by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to add his distinctive guitar to their 'Evita' album, and that seems to have given him a taste for guest spots, appearing on albums by Tracey Ullman, Roger Daltry, Wings, Dennis Waterman and Leo Sayer over the next few years.

In he was immortalised on Richard Hawley's 'I'm Absolutely Hank Marvin', on which he also played, as his name has become the rhyming slang for "starving" Marvin-starvin'but obviously it will be as one of the best UK guitarist of all time, and a major influence on a host of young musicians of the 60's and 70's, that he will primarily be remembered. The line-up of the group has changed a number of times over the years, most famously when Jay Aston quit the group in and was replaced by Shelley Preston.

Today, two versions of the group exist: a version which includes original member Bobby G, and a version comprising the other three original members — Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston — under the name The Fizz. The first member to be recruited was Mike Nolanwho was known to Martin. Together, they recorded a demo of the song and entered it for inclusion in A Song for Europe — the preliminary heats for the contest. Realising that a name was needed for the performing artists, Martin quickly decided on Buck's Fizzas it was her favourite drink.

Concurrent to this, Martin was holding auditions for another male vocalist and female vocalist, should Baker turn down the position which she didn't. At the end of these auditions, Martin had found a male singer, Stephen Fischer and female, Jay Aston. Unsure of which female vocalist to use, she ultimately decided to use both Baker and Aston as she felt their vocals complemented each other and Martin stepped down from the group in order to team up with Hill for another line-up as they had two songs in the competition.

The four members came together for the first time on 11 January Jill Shirley, with whom Martin had been in a group called Never Mind - Cliff Richard And The Shadows* - Heroes Collection (CD) who had appeared in the 'A Song for Europe' contest placing fourth agreed to manage the group. During rehearsals, a dance routine was devised for the song which went on to become famous for the moment where the girls' skirts are ripped off halfway through — only to reveal shorter skirts underneath.

The routine itself was choreographed by Chrissie Wickham, a former member of dance troupe Hot Gossipalthough Martin, Baker and Aston have all since laid claim to the skirt-rip idea, Martin had used a similar idea when 'Rags' had taken part in the earlier 'A Song for Europe' contest in ; subsequently performing the same routine on 'Top of the Pops' after failing to win the competition. Later in the month it was released as a single and entered the charts at No.

By the time the contest was staged, the single had risen to No. Although they were favourites to win, the song faced stiff competition, and early votes were poor.

Halfway through the voting process, Bucks Fizz took the lead, although they remained close throughout. Ultimately, Bucks Fizz won the contest by a margin of four points, beating Germany into second place. It charted highly in other countries such as Australiaeventually selling four million copies worldwide.

A follow-up single was recorded amid promotional tours and the group's image was revamped. In May, the single " Piece of the Action " was released. The song boasted a contemporary pop sound and high production values, in contrast to the rock and roll style of "Making Your Mind Up".

As Baker has stated: "Our follow-up single was nothing at all like 'Making Your Mind Up', it was a good, strong, contemporary pop song" [10] "Piece of the Action" became an immediate hit and quickly rose to No.

Buoyed by this success, the group launched into recording their debut album with producer Andy Hill. Released in July, the self-titled album also became a top 20 hit in the UK charts, as did their third single, " One of Those Nights ".

Released in November, it hit the charts and by Christmas was in the top five. Early inthe group were awarded 'best group' at the Daily Mirror Rock and Pop awards ceremony and received a nomination at the Brit awards. In March they released their fifth single, " My Camera Never Lies ", which swiftly climbed the charts and became their third number-one single.

Further success followed in May with the group's second studio album, Are You Readywhich went Gold and became their first top-ten album. With a rock-style lead vocal by member Jay Aston, the single became one of the group's Never Mind - Cliff Richard And The Shadows* - Heroes Collection (CD) hits, featuring in the top 20 of many European countries, including top ten in the UK and top five in France. Early inthe group decided to take time out of the public eye, fearing overexposure for their recent downward trend and instead concentrating on recording in Switzerland.

In May, they embarked on a date tour of the UK, selling out many venues. The break proved to be advantageous, as this single returned the group to the UK top 20, peaking at No. The group saw their fortunes tumble once again, as Never Mind - Cliff Richard And The Shadows* - Heroes Collection (CD) the album or "Golden Days" dented the top As Christmas came around, the group embarked on another UK tour and released the album's title singlea minor hit that reached No.

On 11 Decemberwhile on tour and returning from a sold-out gig in Newcastlethe group's tour bus was extensively damaged after colliding with an articulated lorry. While no one was killed, several members of the crew were badly injured, including all the members of Bucks Fizz. Bobby G was treated for whiplash, Jay Aston was hospitalised for back injuries and severe head pains and Cheryl Baker broke three vertebrae in her spinebut it was Mike Nolan who suffered the worst injuries.

He remained in a coma for three days whilst the British press kept Bucks Fizz on the front-page headlines. On 15 December, it was reported that Nolan awoke from his coma with the words "I'm all right". Following this, Nolan was ordered to not work for the next six months. On 12 Decemberthe original Bucks Fizz Nolan, Baker and Aston played a benefit concert for HeadFirst at Newcastle City Hall to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the accident — the same venue they played the night of the crash.

With Nolan recuperating during earlythe group returned to recording and released their next single in June. However, within the group, tensions had mounted to the point that Jay Aston no longer wanted to continue.

After early promotion and a concert in Newcastle, she sensationally quit the group, despite still being under contract. Again, Bucks Fizz found themselves the subject of newspaper headlines, this time with the revelation that Aston had been having an affair with Andy Hill — the husband of the group's creator, Nichola Martin. Aston sold her story to the press in an article headlined "The hateful, bitchy world of Bucks Fizz," while member Cheryl Baker was keen to point out that they were never friends.

Auditions were held at the Prince of Wales Theatrewhere girls were seen. Eventually, year-old Shelley Preston was given the job and unveiled to the press and TV amid much media attention. In earlythe group's contract with RCA expired and a new one with Polydor was signed. The first single, " New Beginning Mamba Seyra ", was released in May and brought the group back to prominence, becoming a top hit and one of their most successful singles.

These proved to be the end for Bucks Fizz as a recording group, and after a concert tour inPreston left the group at the end of the year.
