I think the most personal movie I've made is Schindler's List I think the second-most personal movie I have ever made is E. I also find The Color Purple to be a personal film for me. So I've made a number of personal films. But I haven't made a movie yet that is actually a mirror neuron of my factual life and I don't think I ever will. My sister wrote a script about our lives and that might come around again some day, but I've always stayed away from anything that is too biographical.
The one ingredient I bring to all of my films is the ability to listen to anybody who has a good idea on the production. I'm very collaborative with actors, with my writers, with my editor, my cinematographer, with Johnny Williams who does all of my scores. And I just think from a very young age my parents taught me probably the most valuable lesson of my life - sometimes it's better not to talk, but to listen.
I never know what I'm in for. Most of my presumptions about a production are usually wrong. For instance, with Schindler's List I was pretty certain that whatever came my way in Poland I could tolerate, and just put my camera between myself and the subject, and protect myself by creating my own aesthetic distance.
And immediately, on the first day of shooting, that broke down. I didn't have that as a safety net and immediately I realized that that this was about to become the most personal professional experience of my life. It was a devastatingly insightful experience, but it's something I still haven't gotten over. I think back on the production of Schindler's List with very sad memories, because of the subject matter, not because of the working experience.
The working experience was nearly perfect because everybody held on to each other in that production. We formed a circle. It was very therapeutic, and for a lot of people, it changed their lives. A lot of the actors, a lot of the crew, it changed their lives.
It changed my life, for sure. But other productions I've gone into with a blythe spirit, thinking, This film's a pushover. It's often when I take that attitude, the movie turns around and runs over me as if it were a tank. So I've tried my best to stop second-guessing what the working experience is going to be like.
Because I'm usually wrong. My movies are all different. I've tried to make every movie as if it was made by a different director, because I'm very conscious of not wanting to impose a consistent style on subject matter that is not necessarily suited to that style. So I try to re-invent my own eye every time I tackle a new subject. But it's hard, because everybody has style.
You can't help it. It just comes off you like pollen. I mean, if you're a bee, you're a bee, but at the same time I try very hard to work a little out of the box every time I make a choice. And I had to go back to a box that I had helped invent in the s to accomplish the task of bringing Indiana Jones back to life in the 21st century. We went right back to the blazing Technicolor style of the first three installments.
But I didn't want to update Indiana Jones to the s beyond hair, makeup, costumes and cars. I wanted it to look very similar to the first three pictures. I've never used John Williams to tell people how to feel. I use John Williams to enhance my vision and my thoughts emotionally from scene to scene.
He'll signal when the shark is coming, which are the most famous single notes next to Beethoven's Fifth. In telling a story, I will use every tool in my arsenal. I will do anything in my power to communicate the best story as I know how. The director agreed to use Janusz and he was great.
I think Janusz has brought a lighting style to my movies that I'd never had before. Even Allen Daviau who had done three pictures with me, who I think is the greatest lighting cameraman in town. But Janusz brought more daring, dangerous light into my films. I set the camera. I do all the blocking. I choose the lenses. I compose everything. But Janusz, basically, is my lighting guy. And he's a master painter with light; he's made tremendous contributions to my work through his art. The minute anybody presumes that they are heroes, they get their boots taken away from them and buried in the sand.
That's not going to happen. In the re-creation of combat situations, and this is coming from a director who's never been in one, being mindful of what these veterans have actually gone through, you find that the biggest concern is that you don't look at war as a geopolitical endeavor. You look at war as something that is putting your best friend in jeopardy.
You are responsible for the person in front of you and the person behind you, and the person to the left of you and the person to the right of you. Those are the small pods that will inadvertently create a hero, but that is someone else's observation, not the observation of those kids in the foxholes. There's no other way to learn about it, except through documentaries. I encourage documentarians to continue telling stories about World War II.
I think documentaries are the greatest way to educate an entire generation that doesn't often look back to learn anything about the history that provided a safe haven for so many of us today.
Documentaries are the first line of education, and the second line of education is dramatization, such as "The Pacific. These islands were stepping stones to the mainland of Japan. We weren't trained by the drill instructors stateside. We were trained by the enemy, in how to fight the enemy.
They trained us how to fight like them. I don't want to compare one war to the other, in terms of savagery, but there's a level when nature and humanity conspire against the individual.
To see what happens to those individuals, throughout the entire course of events, leading up to the dropping of the two atomic bombs, is something that was very, very hard for the actors, the writers and all of us to put on the screen, but we felt we had to try. In Saving Private Ryan I had a sense that I was establishing a template, based on the experiences communicated to me by the veterans who fought that morning on Dog Green, Omaha Beach, and their experiences, and the very few surviving photographs of the great war correspondent, Robert Capa.
I combined those photographs to try to find a frame-per-second equivalent for how I can show that kind of terror and chaos without making a movie that looked elegant and beautiful and in full living color, very much like war movies had been made in the past. It wasn't that I was trying to break the mold of the old war movie approach, visually, but I was simply trying to validate all of this testimony that had been communicated to us, based on the young men that lived and survived that battle.
I didn't know it was going to establish a look for war movies, but it was certainly what I thought was right for that particular story. And I'm a big fan of scams. I loved The Flim-Flam Man I loved Scarecrow with Gene Hackman. I loved Elmer Gantry - which I think is a bit of a scam movie. You know, some of those villains, you have to sympathize with them. I've had darkness in all the films, in E. I just don't think people have stopped to study.
They may not have stopped to think when they assume that I suddenly developed a dark side because of Schindler's List When critics carp about my dark side, I always wonder, "Well, did they really look in the shadows? I'm very relaxed about Oscars. I'll admit to you that I wasn't relaxed before I won for Schindler's List I was pretty much worried about it and almost wanted to get one behind me to get the anxiety out of my gut every time December reared its ugly head.
Whatever happens, happens. I had a lot to prove when I made Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark because I had done three movies in a row that had gone wildly over budget and schedule,Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Jaws I was ready to turn over a new leaf and Raiders was my chance to make a movie responsibly - under schedule and under budget. Fortunately George Lucas gave me a lot of support and help with preparation. I wasn't dreaming of big box office or making a classic; all I was focused on was making a film the audience would like and doing it in a way that was fiscally responsible.
I think we were all surprised by the worldwide success of Raiders. I remember hearing people quote lines from the film or seeing kids pretend to be the characters, and realizing that the film had gone beyond box office success and had entered popular culture. That was one of the happy aftershocks of making that movie. More than anything, we want our films to be watchable and Raiders is a movie I can watch with my kids and completely detach myself from the fact that I directed it.
I sit back and enjoy it. For a kid who grew up dreaming of making memorable images, it's a thrill to know Raiders is one of those films where people just have to see the silhouette of the main character, and they immediately think, "Indiana Jones!
My first assignment was to show Michael Crichton around the Universal lot. Michael was a gentle soul who reserved his flamboyant side for his novels. There is no one in the wings that will ever take his place. In no way, shape or form am I doing that. I'm simply asking why the world feels that the only acceptable response to violence is counter-violence.
I'm not answering that question. Just asking it. When I did War HorseI was struck by the reality of being out in the fresh air, seeing the sky changing and light moving, and seeing the performances in real time. But being corralled in a digital world with no way out on Tintin became so thrilling to me, I was completely enveloped and enraptured.
Daniel Day-Lewis would have always been counted as one of the greatest of actors, were he from the silent era, the golden age of film or even some time in cinema's distant future. When you listen, you learn, You absorb like a sponge - and your life becomes so much better than when you are just trying to be listened to all the time.
I tried twice to get Cubby Broccoli to hire me to direct a Bond film. The first time I met him in person was after I'd done Duel I told him I wanted to do a Bond picture more than anything else in the world and he said, "We only hire British, experienced directors. And I'd tell him what scenes we'd shot. Carlo Rambaldi was E. John has given movies a musical language that can be spoken and understood in every country on this planet.
John Williams is the most common language through which people of all ages communicate and remember to each other why they love movies. I am the only person who can say that I've collaborated with John for exactly half of his life.
Without question, he has been the single most significant contributor to my success as a filmmaker. This nation's greatest composer and our national treasure is also one of the greatest friends I have ever had in my entire life. There are parts of Hook I love. I'm really proud of my work right up through Peter being hauled off in the parachute out the window, heading for Neverland. I'm a little less proud of the Neverland sequences, because I'm uncomfortable with that highly stylized world that today, of course, I would probably have done with live-action character work inside a completely digital set.
But we didn't have the technology to do it then, and my imagination only went as far as building physical sets and trying to paint trees blue and red. That was the main criticism. The other criticism was that I had softened the book.
I have always copped to that. I made the movie I wanted to make from Alice Walker's book. Alice was on the set a lot of the time and could have always stepped forward to say, "You know, this is too Disney. This is not the way I envisioned the scene going down. There were certain things in the [lesbian] relationship between Shug Avery and Celie that were finely detailed in Alice's book, that I didn't feel could get a [PG] rating.
And I was shy about it. In that sense, perhaps I was the wrong director to acquit some of the more sexually honest encounters between Shug and Celie, because I did soften those. I basically took something that was extremely erotic and very intentional, and I reduced it to a simple kiss. I got a lot of criticism for that. It has a scent and it is imperfect. If you get too close to the moving image, it's like impressionist art.
And if you stand back, it can be utterly photo-realistic. You can watch the grain, which I like to think of as the visible, erratic molecules of a new creative language.
After all, this "stuff" of dreams is mankind's most original medium, and dates back to Today, its years are numbered, but I will remain loyal to this analogue art-form until the last lab closes. He wanted to wait a year. And it was a masterstroke because he had a year to do research. He had a year to find the character in his own private process. He had a year to discover how Lincoln sounded, and he found the voice.
He had Lincoln so embedded in his psyche, in his soul, in his mind, that I would come to work in the morning and Lincoln would sit behind his desk, and we could begin.
President, but that was my idea. I also wore a suit every day which I don't usually do when I'm directing. Everybody was dressed up in their period wardrobe. I did not wear 19th century wardrobe.
I wore pretty good clothes from this era. I just wanted to blend in. We knew we were in the 21st century at all times. But once you stepped onto the stages of the White House, everybody really felt that they were making a contribution to remembering this critical moment in our shared history.
I don't plan my career. I don't think I'll go dark, dark, dark, then light, then dark. I react spontaneously to what falls into my arms, to what is right at the time. They're the only times I've said, "Okay, I need to make these pictures for the public because they're craving it. I didn't want to make a serious picture like Schindler's List It boggles my mind how much I feel is left on my plate. There are things on the other side of the supper table stewing in pots that I'm not really even aware of.
I would retire if I didn't feel that way. Artificial Intelligence ] A. That's kind of the way Hollywood works today. Small margins. Close Encounters of the Third Kind made so much money and rescued Columbia from bankruptcy. It was the most money I ever made, but it was a meagre success story. The world would be a poorer place without Doctor Who I think that science fiction is the child of every soul with an imagination. There's no predicting what the next generation of imaginative writers and directors be giving all of us.
Sci-fi, in a way, is the greatest exercise. It's like turning your brain into a muscle. It just exercises every single aspect of your brain. It sometimes forces filmmakers to think, on the one hand, as a quantum physicist and, on the other hand, as a capricious idealist. It's fun. It's like when actors say they would rather play the villain than the hero because the villain has more character.
Science fiction is the character of every genre. I actually have a dream sci-fi project that I'm not ready to talk about yet. But it's in the early, early, early planning stages and I'm very excited about it.
It will be an original screenplay. I'm not going to write it. I wrote the story and somebody else will write the screenplay. It was required reading. How do you require a child of let's say twelve years-old to read 'A Tale of Two Bridge Over Trouble Water - Elvis Presley - Elvis Lives (DVD) What I did was just make little stick figures in the dog-eared sections of the book, one frame at a time, in different positions. And it was like a flip-book. I just did flip-books and saw these images come to life.
That was the first time I was able to create an image that moved. I've often wondered what gets me to direct and what gets me to produce. I've never been able to answer the question adequately even for myself. When something gets a stranglehold on me and compels me to direct it, I don't question why.
I don't look a gift horse in the mouth. I just know what it feels like to be overwhelmed with a desire to make a movie. And I also know as a businessman what it means to be overwhelmed with a desire to produce a good story. But there's a great difference between production and direction for me. Once I'm producing something, I never think, "Gee, I wonder what it would have been like if I had directed it. But I've never questioned the choices I make as a director.
Whether in success or in failure, I'm proud of every single movie I've ever directed. I get that same queasy, nervous, thrilling feeling every time I go to work. That's never worn off since I was 12 years-old with my dad's 8-millimeter movie camera. The thrill hasn't changed at all. In fact, as I've gotten older, it's actually increased, because now I appreciate the collaboration. When I was a kid, there was no collaboration, it's you with a camera bossing your friends around.
But as an adult, filmmaking is all about appreciating the talents of the people you surround yourself with and knowing you could never have made any of these films by yourself. My job was constantly to keep a movie family going. I'm blessed with the same thing that John Ford and Howard Hawks and Alfred Hitchcock were blessed with, a mini-industry very similar to the one from the golden era of Hollywood, where it was the same people making movies with you each and every time.
And it makes life so much more enjoyable when you get to go home to your family and go to work with your other family. We were absolutely spellbound by the brilliance of the performances and especially the way the director observed his players - the way he just let the characters breathe. The spaces were as important as what they said - what they weren't saying - and we just felt that it was a profound love story and whether or not it plays in the United States was not a criterion for any of our choices.
We didn't think about how it was going to play; we just were really happy that somebody had the courage to tell the story the way they told it.
He made a gift to the world with his emotional epic Gandhi and he was the perfect ringmaster to bring the dinosaurs back to life as John Hammond in Jurassic Park He was a dear friend and I am standing in an endless line of those who completely adored him.
I could never have been an accountant. I got a D in math. And it was all in the script too. However, I don't want that in my movies. I want our century-plus medium to keep its filmic look and I like seeing very fine, swimming grain up there on the screen. To me, it's just more alive and it imbues an image with mystery, so it's never literal. I love movies that aren't literally up in my face with images so clear there is nothing left to our imaginations.
Had I shot it on a digital camera, the Omaha Beach landings in Saving Private Ryan would have crossed the line for those that found them almost unbearable. Paintings done on a computer and paintings done on canvas require an artist to make us feel something.
To be the curser or the brush, that is the question and certainly both can produce remarkable results. But doesn't the same hold true for the cinematic arts? Digital or celluloid? Vive la difference! Shouldn't both be made available for an artist to choose? When I think of 8mm, I think of the movies. This is something that I'll be doing for the rest of my life. He celebrates the frame, not just what happens inside of it.
He's like a classic painter. So I have to watch The Searchers I have to. Almost every time. TV : Untitled. There, he fell in love with the bar's star singer, Bianca, who he later learned was an evil future distillation of one of Iris Wildthyme 's regenerations who had a similar plan to that of the Valeyard involving stealing the remainder of Iris' lives. After confirming his love for Bianca, almost shooting Iris and causing a time ramthe Doctor and Iris managed to defeat Bianca and her army of shadows and psychic worms.
The Doctor attempted to free a thief from the security system, but was forced to hide in his TARDIS while the wardens searched the building. He was arrested shortly afterwards on a suspicion of thieving, but succeeded in convincing the officers of his innocence, immediately before he met Reeve Maupassant, who he recognised as Grayvorn.
The Doctor discovered that, after his fifth incarnation saw the Mother Superior and Grayvorn fell from the convent bell tower, the Relic merged Grayvorn and the Mother Superior's minds into one, making Grayvorn immortal at the cost of ever being able to sleep.
Realising that Grayvorn was behind the raid, the Doctor reasoned that he had intended to use a failed theft of the Relic as an excuse to claim it for himself under the guise of protecting evidence. However, just as Grayvorn tried to open the Relic to transfer the second soul into a new host, he was distracted by Danby, an Inquisitor who had been helping the Doctor's enquiries, giving the Doctor the chance to open the Relic on Grayvorn and dispel him from his physical form, whilst simultaneously absorbing the Mother Superior into it.
After another reclusive period, the Doctor travelled to ancient Greece where he met Plato and had an adventure with the Spindle of Necessity and an alien race called the Fates. After being told that becoming the Valeyard was but one possible future, the Doctor was heartened to continue his travels.
While travelling alone, the Doctor was drawn back to the Halloween party at the old house he had visited in his first incarnationand was made to believe that the First Doctor had never left the house and his experiences ever since had been fabricated by the Celestial Toymaker. Though doubting his own existence, the Doctor challenged the Toymaker to a game of "two truths and one lie", which revealed that the Toymaker was lying.
Creating a no-win situation in the game that prevented the Toymaker from giving an answer, the Doctor escaped in his TARDIS, and left the Toymaker trapped in his domain. When all else failed, he resorted to destroying their Shushkubrainadvertently imprinting himself onto the Galyari consciousness.
Arriving in Birmingham in the s, the Doctor was horrified to witness a witch trial in progress and sought to end it, only for the accused witches to reveal themselves as Carrionites.
The Carrionites rampaged, teasing the Doctor about his future as the Valeyard which he retorted was just a possibility. The Doctor works with his other selves within the Void. Along with seven other incarnations, the Sixth Doctor became trapped in the Void when it began to attack and devour the universe. He and the others were able to form a dimensional bridge to allow the Eighth Doctor to escape, and were then joined by the War Doctorfollowed shortly by the ninthtenth and twelfth incarnationswho ventured into the Type 1 TARDIS responsible for the disturbance.
The Doctor visited a bed and breakfast surrounded by an impenetrable fogand discovered that the owners, Chloe and Arthurwere killed by versions of themselves every night, only to wake in their beds the next morning, and now he was destined to share in this fate. After over a month of trying, the Doctor managed to persuade the couple to escape the loop by refusing to go outside and be killed.
Info from I. Attempting to brew a pot of tea, the Doctor was interrupted by turbulence caused by the TARDIS becoming caught in another vessel's wake. Crash landing on a barren planet, the Doctor was attacked, only to be awakened by Peri, who revealed that they were on a planet called Refiloewhere she had become stranded after fleeing her unhappy marriage. The two discovered the Doctor's TARDIS was emitting a dangerous form of temporal energy that was ageing the people of the planet into dust.
While investigating, Peri contracted a deadly disease and died. Furious, the Doctor set about to uncover the plot he was being tangled in, and discovered that everything that had happened after his arrival had been a hallucination and that he was hooked up to a dream machine, with the demises of Peri and his TARDIS being used to lure the Doctor into committing suicide.
The Doctor searched for Peri in her hometown. Recalling an adventure he had had in his fifth incarnationthe Doctor travelled to Los Angelesto meet a version of Peri who was transported to Earth, with all her memories of travelling in the TARDIS wiped. During an adventure involving the Pisconsthe Doctor and Peri discovered that due to the manipulations of the Time Lords, five alternate Peris existed simultaneously in the universe. The Doctor arrived during the middle of a war on Cawdorand discovered a plot by a figure called "Tenebris" to use a secret weapon called the Acheron Pulse.
However, discovering that Tenebris was an old acquaintance, Kylo Sorshathe Doctor foiled his plan and gave him a second chance. Tracking a nexus point distortion, the Doctor encountered university lecturer and historian Evelyn Smythe.
Realising her importance to the timelines, the Doctor allowed her to come with him back in time to stabilise the nexus point and save her life. Upon doing so, Evelyn insisted on joining the Doctor on his travels, as she did not want to pass up the opportunity to explore history first-hand.
Arriving in Lanyon Moorthe Doctor once again met his old friend Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart and uncovered a slew of unsolved mysteries that centred around the malevolent work of a stranded Tregannan named Sancreda.
Sancreda had been trapped on Earth for many millennia, and, upon awakening, tortured and destroyed several humans with his psionic powers. Discovering that he had not been abandoned as he had believed, and that instead he had caused his brother's accidental death, Sancreda threatened to destroy the Earth in a fit of rage, prompting the Brigadier to trick him into causing his own demise before he enacted his wrath on the entire planet.
After the Doctor realised that the mythical Temperon was connected to the time distortion, Azimendah was killed by Ellie, who revealed herself to be of the Sirens of Timeand the Doctor was trapped in his TARDIS after accidentally freeing the Knights of Velyshaabut saved by the Temperon, who took him to Gallifrey to meet with his fifth and seventh incarnations.
The Doctors were almost tricked into undoing their altercations to history, but they instead released the Temperon from the Knights of Velyshaa so that it could trap the Sirens of Time in an eternal struggle. With the Sirens of Time's manipulations to history averted, the Sixth Doctor was returned to his proper place in time by the Seventh Doctor. He met with the Time Lord delegation, consisting of the Acting President and Vansellwho informed him that President Romana had disappeared whilst investigating Etra Prime twenty years ago.
The Daleks attacked the conference, during which the Doctor deduced the temporal wake was Etra Prime itself on a collision course with Archetryx.
As he tried to raise the defences, he was reunited with Romana, who had escaped from Etra Prime after tweny years as a Dalek slave. As he, Romana and the Acting President planned their next mind they were contacted by a Black Dalekwhich revealed the Daleks had developed the Apocalypse Element and were primed to unleash it in the Seriphia Galaxy. The Doctor and the President called its bluff, believing no lifeform would dare unleash such a thing, but were horrified when the Dalek followed through with its threat.
The Doctor and Romana attempted to use the Eye of Harmony to contain the effect, but it proved insufficient. After this failure, the Doctor lost his temper with Evelyn, proclaiming she could not possibly understand the scale of the destruction unfolding.
Afterwards, the dying Black Dalek revealed to him this was their plan all along, as Seriphia had now been reborn into thousands of virgin worlds which the Daleks were primed to seize. The Doctor and Evelyn quietly departed the recovering Gallifrey. Stopping for food in the south of England, the Doctor and Evelyn met Amelia Doory and Reggie Meada couple apparently experimenting with finding a cure to their contamination with vampire DNA.
On their trail was a vampire named Nimrodhead of a secret Black Ops organisation called the Forgewho managed to hunt the pair down in an effort to correct the failed experiment he had conducted decades earlier, code-named Project: Twilight. Evelyn befriended a young mother named Cassie Schofieldwhile the Doctor helped Amelia perfect a cure to stop their mutation, only for Amelia to betray the Doctor and turn the cure into a superior virus, first infecting Cassie, before fleeing to infect the rest of the world.
Nimrod teamed up with the Doctor to stop Amelia, blowing up Amelia's blood bank, while the Doctor pursued her, knocking the virus into the water of the River Thamesprompting her to dive for it and drown. The Doctor took Cassie to Norway to live in secret while he developed a cure for her condition.
The Doctor on Chronos. WC : Real Time. The Doctor met a young doctor named Reece Goddardwho turned out to be a hybrid Cyberman from an alternate timeline, and came under attack by partially converted Cybermen. After nearly causing a paradox involving 20th century Earth and the late 33rd centurythe Doctor was able to defeat the Cyber-Controller.
The Doctor returned to the Clutch to scare the Galyari into submission, and learned of mysterious deaths blamed on his actions. Upon investigating, he came under attack by a Galyari seeking to end his terror, but the Doctor managed to convince him that another force was using his reputation against them. After dealing with the looming threat, the Doctor made peace with the Galyari.
After suffering from a psychic shock, the Doctor and Evelyn landed on a Lorannan-Ycole Corporation gas dredger in Jupiter 's atmosphere in When the ship became endangered by a faulty navigation buoy, the Doctor helped the crew evacuate. He learned that the Corporation was attempting to destroy a telepathic gestalt entity which attacked anything that came near it.
Instead, the dredger's telepathic captain sacrificed herself to merge with the entity, which had previously absorbed her husband 's consciousness, ending the threat. Having received a weird transmission, the Doctor and Evelyn arrived in London but in an alternative timeline in which England, the English Empire, was the central political power in the world after the Great Dalek War of The Doctor and Evelyn found themselves in the 18th century on a ship boarded by pirates in the Caribbean Sea.
They accompanied the crew to the Ruby Islands with little help from Captain Swan. Evelyn was greatly saddened when the cruel captain Red Jasper beat a cabin boy to death. She was taken home to find a suicide letter from one of her students, Sally. The Doctor, after being persuaded by Evelyn, travelled with Evelyn back to the day before the letter was sent to spend time with Sally and prevent the suicide telling her their story with the pirates.
After finding a cure for the Twilight virus, the Doctor and Evelyn returned to find Cassie, only to discover that Cassie was now an agent of the Forge. The Doctor was captured by Nimrod, who attempted to force him into undergoing regeneration so that he could study it, while Evelyn tried to restore memories of Cassie's that had been suppressed by Nimrod. Evelyn was successful, and Cassie was freed from Nimrod's influence and rescued the Doctor, only to be killed by Nimrod before she could escape.
The TARDIS fell through a time barrier to Edinburghwhere Robert Knoxa time travelling showman, was manipulating the timeline of the William Burke and Billy Hare murders to profit from a viewing audience of alien businessmen while ostensibly finding a cure for an alien race which was dying from flu at the same time.
The Doctor brought one of the murder victims, Daft Jamiewho was infected with the virus, out of the barrier to Januaryand tricked him into infecting Knox, who had no resistance and was unable to reset time to undo the infection, forcing Knox to escape in his own TARDIS. The Doctor and Evelyn landed on the Valiant where members of the crew hear an ancient bell ringing, there is a mysterious door and Evelyn hears the words " Time's End ". They travel to to find the source of the noises. The Doctor and Evelyn celebrated Morzart's th birthday and considered this the norm but ended up changing history so that he died a young man in The Doctor was convinced that they accidently prevent the birth of Julius Caesar.
Evelyn tried to persuade the Doctor that the world would be better with Julia Caesar rather than Julius but the Doctor wanted to protect history, They realised that history was not changed as they had miscalculated when Julius was conceived. Julia was always the elder sister of Julius. The Doctor took Evelyn to pay her condolences to her former-student Jacob Williams who had recently lost his Father, Frank.
Jacob explained how everytime a son was born in their family, the grandparents were killed. Later, Jacob's Mother, Marydied after drinking a tea Evelyn prepared, the Doctor examined her and discovered she was just frozen and ordered they dig up Frank who had been buried alive. The Doctor deducts that Evelyn was a shapeshifter who had poisoned the grandparents whilst the real Evelyn was frozen in time in a field. The Doctor came under the influence of an external force that informed him that they had sent an assassin to inject him with a lethal virus that would kill him in a hundred days.
Together with Evelyn, he narrowed down the planets and went to investigate, witnessing his previous incarnationPeri and Erimem attending a party, his next incarnation being held at gunpoint before being rescued by Ace and Hexand two versions of his eighth incarnation playing poker in a bar. Spending days flying a kite on an archaeological expedition with Bernice Summerfieldhe finally tracked down the assassin and tricked him supplying the antidote.
They discovered that Robert Knox wasn't dead and wanted to manipulate time to stop the assassination, and that he had made a deal with the Indo to stop his own death. Landing on a train which went to Fortunethe Doctor and Evelyn met Rachel-Ann Donovan who told them both that she was going there to find her father's murderer. He heard his description being said over the phone which led the Doctor to think that he was wanted by the Sheriff for murder.
They came along a gold mine on their way to the town, and talked to the people who worked there. The Doctor was captured and arrested for murder but, knowing that he was not guilty, Rachel-Ann helped him escape.
Unfortunately he was recaptured by the Mayor's men and left to be trapped in a mine explosion. Evelyn untied him and redirected the explosion to uncover and redirect the underground river to irrigate the land. On a visit tothe Doctor and Evelyn encountered Thomas Brewsterwho was trying to return to his own time when he Bridge Over Trouble Water - Elvis Presley - Elvis Lives (DVD) contacted by Symbiosa sentient planet, who was being invaded by the Terravore. Brewster provided Symbios with hosts who were riding the tube.
While they were travelling in the Time Vortexthe Doctor and Evelyn managed to disarm Brewster, and change course before they arrived at their destination. The Doctor justified his actions by saying that if Brewster returned to his own time, then using his future knowledge would cause chaos and anarchy. The Doctor, Evelyn and Brewster materialised on the Axos spaceship that the Third Doctor had trapped in a time loop on 20th century Earth.
Accepting Brewster's wishes after an adventure in Victorian Lancashirethe Doctor left Brewster behind in his own time after he killed the creature that caused the chaos. Here, the Doctor discovered that Mila wasn't the real Charley, and Charley had been found and cured by the Viyrans, whom she helped for several millennia in their quest to expunge all the viruses which had escaped from the Amethyst station.
After Mila sacrificed herself to save the Doctor and the Earth, Charley revealed her identity to the Doctor, and pleaded with him to allow her to restore the Web of Time. To make him want to forget his travels with her, she told him of the truth of her situation, and her belief that she knew how he would die.

After tampering with the controls, Raleigh travelled back four hundred years, and encountered a group of alien beings, who would later become the children who had terrorised the tribe.
He taught them how to live and hunt and, in return, they extended his life. After the aliens disappeared, the Doctor encouraged the now paradoxical Raleigh to step outside and see the true fate of the settlers before he ceased to exist, and dematerialised.

He went back to the Theatre, where he managed to stop the Valeyard from killing Jago and Ellie Higson. The Valeyard then used the anger and fear in the Doctor's mind to rejuvenate himself. Flip successfully saved the Doctor and in turn overcame her stage fright by performing nursery rhymes onstage. The Doctor and Flip landed in a mine in ChihuahuaMexicos after detecting some strange particles which contained Artron energy. There they discovered that the another version of themselves were the source of the signal, being frozen in time.

Mary later reappeared in the twenty fourth season episode, " Moonshine River ". In it, she is deemed as Bart's last hope in his quest to find true love in the form of one of his many former dates. When Bart arrives at the Spuckler house, Cletus informs him that she ran away after he scheduled her for marriage again.
After Bart and the rest of his family travel to The Big Apple, he eventually finds her at her address, and discovers that she has matured, becoming slightly taller and slimmer, and also learns that she now works as a writer and has a performance option on Saturday Night Live. Mary and several citizens of New York sing a song for Bart, and the two realize that they truly love one another.
Before they can kiss, Cletus arrives, having somehow found out where Mary is, and asks her to return home. Mary accepts, but while at the train station, she and Bart take advantage of Cletus's distraction to flee to another departing train.
Mary tells Bart that there will be more Mary Spucklers out there, and gives him their first kiss before she leaves. The family and Cletus arrive, with Cletus demanding where Mary is heading for, but Bart, not wanting to ruin his last chance at true love, refuses, and Cletus then accepts the fact that he must let his daughter go.
Mary reappeared again in the season, in the episode " Love is a Many-Splintered Thing ". While she was not employed outside the home, Maude was a busy homemaker and advocate for children, whose innocence was often sullied by cartoon violence, liberal education, and the insidious influences of popular culture. Although she spent much of her free time in prayer, reading the Bible, and helping out her husband at the Leftoriumshe let her hair down for the occasional dinner parties at the home of her neighbors, the Simpsons.
Homer often made statements insinuating his attraction to Maude. In the season 2 episode " The War of the Simpsons ", Homer ogled Maude's cleavage at a dinner party, which resulted in him and Marge going to marriage camp.
In the season 11 episode " Alone Again, Natura-Diddily ", Maude was killed by a T-shirt cannon at the Springfield Speedway when Homer ducked at the last second to pick up a bobby pin on the ground. Ned was devastated by her death. The character was voiced by Marcia Mitzman Gaven at that time. Roswell returned to The Simpsons in after reaching a deal with producers to allow her to record her lines from her home in Denver.

They are usually seen flanking the mayor at town meetings, but sometimes they appear as members of a crowd. On one occasion they neglected their duties while admiring passing clouds, oblivious to Quimby being in danger. This resulted in their being temporarily replaced by Homer. When Cookie Kwan presented a baby that she claimed was Quimby's, the mayor passed it off to one of the bodyguards and tells him to raise the child as his own. The bodyguards put sunglasses on the baby. Plopperalso known as Spider-Pig a play on the popular fictional character Spider-Man and Harry Plopper a play on the popular fictional character Harry Potteris a pig who first appears in The Simpsons Movie.
Plopper has since become memetic, gaining popularity in the real world and on the internet, especially his theme song "Spider-Pig", which peaked at number 23 in the UK Singles Chart. Plopper has also made appearances in the episodes and comics, and also appears in the reanimated opening sequence, featuring in the pan across Springfield.
Plopper's first appearance is in the movie, where he stars in a TV ad to promote Krusty's new burger, The Clogger. After the filming is completed, Krusty orders the pig to be killed. Homer becomes upset about this, and immediately adopts him. Homer then spends a lot of time with Plopper and neglects Bart. Later in the movie, Homer is seen making the pig walk on the ceiling while singing " Spider Pig ", a parody of the Spider-Man theme song. Homer later calls him Harry Plopper, and the pig is seen with glasses and a lightning bolt-shaped scar, based on the character Harry Potter.
Homer then creates a large container in which to put Plopper's "leavings", which he dumps in a lake and pollutes the whole area, leading to the shutdown and near-destruction of Springfield to which Homer does not want to return.
At one point in the movie, the Simpsons' house is completely destroyed after being sucked into a sinkhole in their backyard. This may lead to the assumption that the pig is killed in the movie. However, during the San Diego Comic Convention, an official Simpsons Panel revealed that there was a scene at the end of the movie involving the pig that was cut which later appeared on the DVD.
During the following TV seasons, Plopper makes a few more appearances including a main role in the episode " Pork and Burns ". When network executives decided that The Itchy and Scratchy Show needed an update to keep the "interest" of its audience, they devised Poochie, a cartoon dog "with an attitude".
After widespread auditions, Homer was chosen to provide Poochie's voice. The character debuted to an unimpressed audience, following a massive publicity campaign ; he only served to interfere with the well-oiled machine of hyperviolent slapstick that Itchy and Scratchy had perfected over the years.
When dissatisfied viewers flooded the network with letters crying for Poochie's immediate removal, if not death, the executives decided to get rid of the character. Homer begged for another chance, insisting that Poochie would grow on the audience; this argument held little weight until the actress who performed voices for both Itchy and Scratchy declared her support for Poochie as well.
However, Homer was shocked when the next cartoon aired: it contained a hastily animated, retroscripted segment stating that Poochie had decided to return to his "home planet", and that he died on the way there. However, he survives, only to have his skateboard fall from the sky and hit him in the head. A matrix Poochie appears in " Kill Gil Vols.
